When my dad was a G.I. in WWII, he was told that the Germans could shoot OUR rifle ammo - given the differences - .308" vs 8mm (.315") - and case length - 63 mm vs 57mm - could this be feasible?

WWII (not eleven) battle ammo was chambered in 30-06 m1, 30 carbine and .45ACP. 308 Winchester didn’t arrive until 1952(ish). Germany used 8mm as the primary caliber.
I may be incorrect on the calibers and I’m sure someone will correct me.

IIRC the Swiss rifles (7.5x55) would chamber the ammo issued by the US. (30-06)
At least that’s what I was told.
I wouldn’t attempt it.

I wanted to double check. The K98 & gewer 43 used the 8mm Mauser. The sturmgwher 44 used a shortened (kurz) version.. 7.92 x 39
