These days, I shoot whatever is available.
On a recent trip to the shop, the conversation went something like this.
Me: āCan I get a box of .380?ā
Them: āSorry, weāre all out of 3.80.ā
Me: āHow about .45?ā
Them: āNo .45, we canāt get enough inventory.ā
Me: āI donāt suppose you have 9mm?ā
Them: āWe have some, but weāre saving it for people buying new guns. If you want to buy a new gun, I can sell you 9mm.ā
Me: ā5.56?ā
Them: āNot since last week. Weāre expecting more soon, we hope.ā
Me: āI donāt suppose you have any .30-06?ā
Them: āOh yeah, we have boxes and boxes of that. You want some?ā
Me: āYeah, sell me as much as you can of the low grain stuff, I donāt want to burst the only rifles I can buy ammo for.ā
.308 and .44 mag. If they donāt get it done shoot twice. If I look hard enough I can usually find. 40 s&w and .357 sig too. As for price, I donāt reload so Iām at their mercy.
Went to my local, hole in the wall, gun shop in Salt Lake City yesterday. Basic FMJ target stuff. $65.00 per box. Thatās got to be a world record. I have the exact same thing in my can with a $12.50 sticker on it. I couldnāt do it.
It seems like things might be improving to some degree. In-store availability at brick-and-mortar stores is still rough but the prices online seem to be coming down. If you look on AmmoSeek.com you can find brass for $0.80 or less per round.
I figured this must be a really old post. Iāve heard and heard about ammo shortages, but have yet to see any real shortage. It never seemed to get that bad here; I get ads from all the big internet stores, and it seems there was always ammo available. Certain brands and specific cartridges in some product lines did become a little slim for a while. The main thing that seemed to be in short supply were specific firearms. But thatās getting a little better too, though not much. I donāt see many real deals any longer, but Iām sure some see good deals occasionally.
Interesting to see the post bump. It seems like supply is better for the most part. For me 12-gauge has been the hardest to fine and is more expensive than 5.56 or 9mm at this point. Depending on where you find it, the cost per round is double.
