10 mm semi or 500 Magnum for bears?

Im in black bear country, also mountain lions…

I have 3 main platforms for backwoods carry, each I can shoot with accuracy I and happy with, and with a decent rate of fire for each…

My favorite to carry.

1911 long slide (6" barrel) 10mm

Light weight (comparatively) Glock 40 10mm long slide with green dot.

Wheel gun, 44mag, 4" ported barrel 6-shot.

Back woods ammo for each platform is TUI ammo for deeper penatration…

If I happen to be carrying one of my many 9mm, the most common is my TP9SFX which for back woods, I keep a 20rd mag of TUI ammo for it…

If you want help deciding, pick the one you can shoot quickly with accuracy…

Roughly there are 44 grizzly bear attacks worldwide each year,
Your chances of being attacked, even if you see one is very slim.
Around here most reports of grizzly bear attacks are from hunters, not from the average hiker, camper or fisherman.

We have a little place outside of Red Lodge Montana, and it is common every summer to have grizzly bears and cubs come through town.
Here is one crossing the highway by the brewery.

And one of my favorite areas to fish, just happens to be in the same area where they dump the bears, they’ve trapped.
I carry bear spray and a 9 mm.
And I don’t bring a lunch with…

Last summer was the first time I’ve used bear spray in 25 years. I used it on a yearling black bear who challenged me just outside of my front door.
As things turned out, this same black bear was euthanized in the summer, after it attacked a young girl in her tent, who had also had food in the tent. That’s a big no-no in bear country.
This bear was accustomed to people and had digging in garbagecans and coolers.

didnt you watch the video a Grizz that size is one very tough and strong adversary. he gave some good advice saying be prepared, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. besides hitting a fast charging bear under that kind of stress and surprise is not as easy as you might imagine. you will very likely miss a few if not several shots.

IDK. I’d be smarter to learn to be more disciplined, such as any scent, even tooth paste or mouthwash be stored separate and not reachable by animals.

Ever hear the anecdote of placing hot cayenne pepper from the grocer around your tent? It warded off raccoons and coyotes to a point I felt guilty doing that to them, once.

Just be sure to wash your hands really good so’s not to get any on you too.

I’m in the woods a lot (Monongahela). I thought about getting a 10mm, but after watching Tim Sundles from Buffalo Bore, and Chuke from Chukes Great Adventures on YouTube I simply got some 9 mm Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman (hardcast flat nose) and .45acp .255 grain hardcast for my existing guns.

To date, 2 years, I’ve yet to see a black bear here which cracks me up. Seen sign, though. Back in CT they were all over, in my yard, seriously all over the place. Not hunted in CT, so no fear, though rarely a nuisance unless you were a blue haired old lady with a yippy little dog….then it was always the bears fault smdh. I had face to face stare downs with bear standing over 7’ tall, and they’d freeze and take off asap. I also recall the footage a guy took in NJ of a black bear, head down, ears back, coming down a trail. Group of people split and ran, the guy got eaten….so yeah, be prepared.

Bear is my only justification for getting a 10mm and I’m nowhere near any of them. Thanks for info on Buffalo Bore, I can carry the VP9SK I guess even in bear country

AI: Yes, you can safely fire

**Buffalo Bore 9mm +P Outdoorsman ammunition**in a HK VP9SK, as the ammunition is designed for modern 9mm pistols in normal operating condition. The hard cast bullets will not cause leading issues in the VP9SK’s polygonal barrel. However, be prepared for increased recoil due to the high-pressure +P load
