I carry one of those cheapo CS gas dispensers that postal workers carry for that reason, even though I own Corsos. Shooting a coyote or other wild animal to defend your pup is fine, but people frown on shooting of domestic animals unless it clearly attacks you. Should you get into trouble with authorities or be sued in civil court, it’ll probably be pointed out that the vast majority of canine-canine altercations are sorted out by the owners without the use of deadly force, and you’ll lose. Speaking for myself, I wouldn’t shoot a dog until it’s latched onto me, not biting at me, but has sunk it’s teeth in (proof, a hole in your trousers won’t mean diddly), then poor doggo goes to his Maker, and the owners foot all the bills.

Be aware that using bear spray against humans or dogs is illegal in some areas. Some states have laws specifically against using bear spray and some have laws against carrying canisters larger than a certain size for self defense purposes.

I’ve heard the argument “It’s not labeled for use against humans” so using it on a person is as illegal as using spray paint or WD-40.

From the information I have been able to find it appears to be legal to use bear spray for self defense in AZ. Though I am not a lawyer and could be wrong on this.

But I have read other State laws that limit the strength and amount of spray you can legally carry. Some states consider bear spray a pesticide so intentionally carrying it and using it for self defense against something other than wildlife could be considered illegal. Though in my mind if someone or something is imminently threatening death or severe bodily harm whatever you can get your hands on to defend yourself with should be fair game. Though my opinion carries no legal weight but maybe a good lawyer could use that argument in a bear spray user’s defense?

I do a lot of surveys on ranch land where the bulls are not always friendly and have had several ranchers recommend carrying bear spray for protection from them so I do keep some in my work vehicle. I will occasionally also carry it when working in areas with a lot of mountain lion or feral hog sign and have carried it when working alone in brown bear country.

Though in general I stick to human rated pepper gel which should be considered legal for most situations. It doesn’t have the range or the large cone that bear spray does but I also don’t have to worry as much about it blowing back in my face.
