I’m really interested in the FN Reflex or Reflex XL for edc. I really liked the way it felt in my hands and shot. I live in an area with a lot of weather change, especially cold weather and long winters. Are there any reliability (or other) concerns for it being an internal hammer fired versus striker-fired?
One advantage is likely the same as S&W advertises for their EZ series.. easier to rack the slide than a similar striker design.
The Ruger Security 9 also features an internal hammer. After many thousands of rounds in all local seasons and weather conditions I have yet to experience a failure attributable the the hammer-fire system. I don’t know how or if the FN design compares to the Ruger.
My friends wife bought one, she had light primer strikes up to 300 rounds.
We ran some high brand ammunition through it and it cleared up.

I’m with @Craig_AR about internal hammer fired pistol being smoother and easier to operate than striker one.
However from mental perspective - both suck. ![]()
If I don’t see and feel the hammer.. I have no control over the handgun… but that’s me.. or I should say my “sick imagination” ![]()
I’m with you on this one. It may just be a personal quirk, but I like to see the hammer. YMMV
I have a Reflex XL (in FDE) and love it.. I see NO “CONS” at all. I absolutely love everything about it. and you get 15/ 18 rnds.. that’s “full size” capacity.. as a “compact/ micro” and it shoots amazing… FN firearms are amazing, This my 3rd FN pistol!
Yeah I went with the XL and also love it. I can only have 10 +1 in my state tho, but other than that been very happy with it!

I don’t know the difference myself. I could be wrong but if the hammer is external - I’d worry about it getting snagged on jacket or shirt, especially when we bundle up in winter. But I guess there are pro’s and cons, depending on one’s needs/style.
It’s not the case.
To be honest none of handgun’s part is interrupting draw process.
I was worried about red dot doing so, but for last 3 years or so, when I started using optics I had zero issues with external hammer, red dot, extended slide stop, ambi thumb safeties.
Personally I prefer external hammer over internal one, because I have full control of it, especially during reholstering.
Hammer snag is a real problem for pocket carry, but not so much for holster carry on belt or shoulder.
So what holster are you guys using?
I dry fired both Reflex and Reflex XL a couple minutes ago. Holster availability and the long reset are the only negatives I see at this point.
There’s probably a Canik MC9LS in my future unless I can identify a good holster for the Reflex XL. I still need to research holsters for the MC9, but expect more selections for it.
I carried an FNP40 for quite some time until it changed roles to bedside duty. Lot of rounds of different ammo through it and never a hicup ![]()
Edit: Vedder and Falco look like FN Reflex XL holster possibilities
Edit2: It appears holsters with adjustable retention for P365 XMacro fit the Reflex XL
Edit3: I really like the looks of this one: Open-Muzzle Leather IWB Holster | Craft Holsters®
BTW, I add stuff to my posts for later reference for me ![]()
I got one at the shop where I bought mine. They had holsters for the reflex in their own in house brand. I was recommended Hidden Hybrid Holsters from someone in another thread here in the forum. They don’t have them available for the reflex right now, but they said they are working on the mold and hoping to be able to start production in January or February.
I did find some out there when I was looking before but can’t remember the specific ones that had them. One was JXTactical though.
Henry Holsters has models for the Reflax and XL
