Hello, this coming summer I will be going to Alaska on vacation. I want to bring my Marlin 45-70 trapper and my sig p320 xten (10mm) as well as ammo.
I am looking into what would be a good setup for these as checked baggage and some guidelines on what to do and what not to do. I remember there was something in the magazine that covered this, but i cant find it now.
Gear + Recommendations welcome please! Price is not as much the issue as quality and safety.
I moved from AK in 2013. Up until i left i ran one of the maintenance shops for Delta. Shipping a gun used to be really relaxed, of course Alaskans are used to firearms. Lower 48, maybe not so much.
Bringing a 45/70 and a 10mm for vacation? If not hunting id leave the 45/70 at home and just carry the 10. I understand the want for a rifle but it got to the point i just carried a 4" 686 for our average hikes. Over night jaunts, yes a rifle but not sure what you have planned
@Cory39 Welcome to the community! Sounds like a fun trip/vacation. Maybe, for safety/protection, stick some airtags/tracking devices in your check-in baggage/gun/rifle cases.
Spend the money for an appropriate sized Pelican Case (the absolute BEST), pack your guns and ammo into it (they can be in the same case) and happily fly to Alaska. There is a 14 kilo limit of ammo allowed in the case. Don’t ask how I know…
You HAVE to check in at the airline counter and tell the agent you’re flying with firearms. He will ask you to open the case and declare that your firearms are unloaded and they’ll put a dumb orange piece of paper in the case. At that point he might or might not ask that a TSA agent also check, that depends on the airport/airline.
Then you lock the case using NON TSA locks. They take your case in as checked luggage and you head off and go through security and board as usual.
When you get to Alaska the Pelican case will come out where they hold special bags, the airline will tell you where. Show up, show ID and they give you your case. That’s it!!!
