I’ll just assume that that is the voice of personal experience talking. LOL Thanks!!

My suggestion is to focus on primary use and do not get to caught up in 'extras" or “possible problems” these are both good strong firearms and not likely to fail.
I’ve got both. I like the 500 because I shoot long guns left handed, and the top tang safety is the cat’s meow for a lefty living in a righty world. It’s my home defense gun. I have two 870’s now (one for ducks, one for the wife).
Aaron25 I shure hope you wife is so big and mean that you’d have to use an 870 for her.
As for myself I have a DP12 double barrel pump that holds 14 rounds, got it for up close and personal
Hey everybody, I’m back with an update on the shotgun purchase with my son this weekend. First of all, thanks to everyone that contributed thoughts and experiences. They were all very helpful and taken into account in the decision. Now for the verdict on what he got. 45IPAC, you hit the nail right on the money!! My son found a obviously used, but still in perfect working order and great shape, as in just take it home, put a little oil on the action and barrel and it’s ready to shoot, Remington 870 Wingmaster pump action 12-gauge. And get this!! He got it at a pawn shop for $300!! How is that for a steal of a deal?? I have some pictures but, for some reason I can’t load them up here. But I will keep trying. It is a beautiful shotgun in absolutely amazing shape!! All you Remington 870 guys would be proud!! He is just as proud of it as can be and I am just as proud of him for making such a good, wise, first time gun purchase as I can be!! Thanks again to everybody for your input and thoughts!! They were much appreciated!!
Thanks for posting the outcome. I didnt chime in with my $0.02 since I didnt really have anything more to add then what had already been said, but I’ve followed the thread.
Your sharing of the experience brought back some really good memories of how it felt when my dad handed down his old Wingmaster to me. It doesnt get shot much these days, but it still feels just as good to break it down and get ‘re-aquainted’ as it did years ago.
Thanks for following the thread and for posting. I’m glad that I could bring back some good memories for you with this. That makes me feel good. My son and I, actually he was one of twin sons that I have, had a great time together shopping for it and all of us going over to one of their friends house to shoot a few rounds through it later on in the afternoon. I’m sure that Wingmaster will get PLENTY of more use!! My other twin son, his brother, has said that he wants to get a rifle for his first gun. So I may be going back up there and doing some rifle shopping with him one weekend.
