In the military wouldn’t what these officers did be called cowardice in the face of the enemy? A charge such as that will get shot, hung, or any other sentences with a similar outcome.

Call me ‘Old Fashioned’ but I’ve always been partial to the ‘scratchy Rope’.
Shootin’s just too fast, This get’s 'em to ‘Think on their Sins’ and if not?

From my understanding that is the reason for the knot in the rope. When the person reaches the bottom, the knot causes the neck to break instantly causing death. The body is left there for insurance purposes.
