Pistol Optics- What's Your Thoughts, What You Got, or Why Not?

I have a 3.25 trijicon on my glock 19 and a Romeo 1 on my Sig P320RX and love both of them. They both have suppressor height sights as well just in case.

I’ve contemplated a 19 MOS Or a FN 509 MRD with an RMR for a while now. I’m just afraid I’ve put so much time in on the Romeo I won’t like it due to the smaller window, it’s been a while since I’ve shot with an RMR. That smaller profile and durability sure is tempting though.

Using optics on a firearm takes some getting used to but once the optic is sighted in it makes a big difference in my own opinion. I love em now!

Aaron, I shoot, train, etc, with my sig p226 sao legion. Maybe conservatively to date, 10,000 rounds thru it. Wanted to purchase a cut slide from sig, but scarce and what 400 to 500.00? I cant remember. I like to shoot from 10 feet to 25 yards. I would like to experiment, but since I am old school, I don’t know if I would like the red dot technique. Have read and research the subject. Have you any more thoughts?

Next question…since the 9mm shortage, was thinking about reloading. Have found some good used reloading equipment, accessories in the 500 dollar mark (within 200 miles of us). Last month, crazy, I sold brass (along with aluminum scrap, etc), almost all 9mm…stupid mistake. Anyways, do you think one can reload for 10 to 12 cent a shot?

The vortex red dot is intrinsically easier for me to acquire as compared to the Trijicon RMR. I have been dry firing the trijicon, and have improved significantly, but it’s still not as intuitive as the vortex. Go figure–less expensive sight, less expensive gun (vortex on a canik) is easier to shoot than a Sig 1911 with a Trijicon.
Reloading–
excluding labor and capital? probably, yes.
.45 acp example (I don’t reload 9)
bullseye 1lb (7000 gr.) is 21.99 5 gr./load=1.6 cents per load
200 gr. RN x 500=56.00 11.2 cents per load
Win. Large primer–33.04 x 1000 3.3 cents per load
I’m at about 20 cents per load–I take into account about 2% loss and haz mat shipping. That’s for .45–probably a little cheaper for 9mm, and will only get cheaper if you buy everything in bulk (esp. powder).
That’s not factoring in the equipment or your time. At the end of the day, the only pistol calibers I reload are .45, 10mm and 5.7 x 28. I have the equipment for .44, but don’t shoot it anymore.
If you’re ever going to do any rifle shooting for accuracy, that is where I’ve found the most benefit–tailoring a round to a rifle. Sounds wierd, but my son’s .300WM doesn’t like the same loads my rifle does. Same with two 7mm 08’s I have.

I have pretty much the same set up as you Joseph, just put my X-Carry slide in a compact grip module. I’m not carrying it edc yet, still searching for some suppressor height sights.

I looked up LAX ammo .45, factory reloads, say for example 230 gr before virus…going to call it BV (before virus)about 30 cents, plus freight, say 35.00…maybe BF 33cents…that is say 13 cents saving you approx. or me if I reload .45… Fairly good savings based on my model. .45 new from lax, BV, 230 gr about 40cents plus freight. I used LAX as an example as have bought several 9mm from them.

I looked at 9mm…if I reload, I might be able to save 8 or 9 cents. Based on BV of factory reloads say 20 cents plus freight. Might save 8 or 9 cents. I have a BV email from angel fire for saving 9% to 15%…should have bought…the old saying wisha, coulda, shoulda.

I don’t think the supply chain will replenish with discounts until fall or next year. Or more.

My old aging eyes, with really good optics, hunting…about 400 yards is my max, 300 yards conservatively. Most of our elk have been shot at that distance. Been shooting .270 for years. Old school, gosh, not wanting to change. Several deer, same yardage.

Sig p226sao optics…another old school idea…I guess until my eyes age some more, I think I will stick with the same EDC, and train as often as we can, using old school iron sights. We do have some nice optics on our assault rifle, have to call it that verbiage, in respect to the liberals. LOL

Sure appreciate your input, means a lot!

I prefer to be without. I’ve been a fan of red dots ever since I started shooting 25 years ago. However, I have no experience with them in the rain, snow, with lots of construction dust, in the mud, being dropped on the asphalt and kicked across the ground, etc. Throughout the year, I have to deal with much of that, and I am confident with the iron sights in those environments.

That being said, if I have an opportunity to train in those conditions to test a red dot, I will reanalyze my options.

@Scotty-- you don’t have to pick–my sig has suppressor level sights I can see just fine through the reticle.

@Aaron25 and @Jeff4 one drill that is helping me with drawing and acquiring the dot was to go into a pitch black room and practicing drawing. The first 20 draws are disheartening, but after that you start picking up the dot pretty quickly. The key is to slow down to a crawl like you are just learning how to draw. It also took me 1,000 rounds to get used to it.

I doubt I will ever go back from having a MRDS on my carry gun ever again. It is worth the price. To touch on your point @Jeff4 about the durability issues, the only 3 MRDS that I have heard recommended for carry or duty use are the RMR, Holosun 507c, and the Leupold DPP.

Yeah those three seem to be what to go with if you commit full time. I really enjoy the Romeo at the range. I will say this for it, it was dropped at the range onto a concrete floor by a certain someone who lives with me full time and enjoys shooting my guns and it did survive with only a scratch and held its zero. Frightening moment none the less, but I made sure not to get upset and was very understanding of it being an accident. Hopefully that will buy me some remorse for my next screw up around the house!

I was about ready to commit full time to carry a RDS, but the quarantine has rekindled my love for my Classis P Series Sig and it’s been riding with me for a couple weeks now.

I just picked up a my new Canik TP9 Elite SC tonight. I have the new Holosun 507K on order, supposed to ship next week. I am excited to get them put together and see how I like it. I’ve never shot with an optic before. If it goes well, I’d like to eventually make this into my EDC.

Don’t get the Ruger readydot. Its a piece of crap

I did look at the Rommeo site. The big thing I didn’t like is the battery replacement. you have to take the site off to change it. The Holosun you don’t. Right now I have a Holosun 507k.
