Not 55 grain, but here is a mini review on M855 (62grain green tip)
The brand that doesn’t fail in the gun you are shooting
Just random fact, Blazer brass is not supposed to be fired in a ported gun. My first carry gun was a PC Shield with ports. (I don’t care for ports anymore). I’m not saying I haven’t done it or won’t do it, but just a fact. The way they box the brass and bullet involves a little ring that can shatter. I’ve had got sharp pieces land on my hand with Blazer. Other than that, I love blazer brass.
My favorite is Winchester, after that Blazer. Fair price and good quality. Typically well stocked at local sporting good stores and I have never had an ammo related malfunction with them.
Whatever ammo I happen to have on hand at any given time.
@BRUCE26 Bruce26 I bought 2k rounds of Igman 5.56 m193 surplus about 5 years ago or so. It’s dated 1982-1986, came in battlepacks, and I have just under 800 rounds left. It’s decent, hotter than IMI (noticeably), and fires well in 3 out of four of my 5.56 guns. The mini14 and 2 ar’s will fire it, my Mossberg mvp is too much of a wimp to overcome the “harder than my other brands” primers, and I’m tired of messing with that gun, and lack of spare parts availability for it. Other brands I have and shoot are federal, IMI, and Freedom Munitions. Just remembered, that Mossberg choked on some IMI as well last outing, so I think I’ll just be using FM in it from now on.
Noted the other day that I got much better groupings and accuracy shooting some 1200fps Fiocci 124 grain in comparison to my Winchester NATO, 2 outings ago. Last outing, I dunno, maybe showing off to my student, maybe just following my own advice…but shot lights out with the Winchester and some Freedom Munitions 9mm…
Opened up a bag of 1974 Vintage Hirtenberger 7.62x51, and that became my favorite sub 155 grain round in that caliber…shame as it’s not around any more.
Malaysian Surplus 7.62x51…I bought 3 cans of 540 rounds at 42 cents a round, and the boxes of 40 rounds come with a pink ribbon tied in a bow…my favorite can opening for sure …I believe the bows are for getting a box out of the can, and pink bows because…well, not that there’s anything wroong with that

Now we know who the ammo sommelier on this site is
For serious defense ammunition I look first to Hornady, Federal, and Speer, and sometimes Winchester. Their purpose made lines. Caution though, even premium ammunition in a top of the line gun, does not always work out. There is no substitute for testing your carry ammunition in your carry gun!
I know that’s an expensive proposition, but it really is a must do.
The brand and load that works best in your particular firearm, of course.
Some guns will gobble up anything you feed them and drive tacks.
Others won’t.
The date of manufacture is important as well.
Some runs from well respected brands—particularly during shortages—have been terrible.
What works for me—
Winchester, Magtech and PMC in 45 acp
PPU, HSM and Magtech in 38 spl
CCI and S-K in 22lr
There are so many quality brands of ammo now. I tend to stay with Federal, Hornaday & Winchester for defense rounds and for target shooting, Maxxtech, Blazzer & Amore
A good friend, especially now, gave me a box of Federal .45 HPs,… jus’ gave em’ to me!
How “good friend” is he? Does the ammo shoot?
try different types, some guns are picky some are not, some ammo has little more recoil. try different ammo and the one you feel comfortable with is the best one for you.range is different than your carry ammo. so don’t compare range ammo to carry ammo.
Welcome to the family brother @Jim212 and you are blessed to be here.
Brand new box of ammo!
very suspicious, very very suspicious…
Have you shot this ammo yet?
OK… Of course I’m kidding…
but - not related to your friend’s gift - last week I attended pistol class and few students used Federal Target ammo bought at the range and it gave a lot of malfunctions…
Welcome to the family brother @Jim212, glad you could join us.
As few people posted - the best ammo is that which is available… however it seems to be less problem right now.
Self Defence ammo - still the same and no reason to change it. BTW - I still got the same amount as I posted first time in July.
So at this moment the best training ammo for me is NORMA and GECO. Both are German made and 100% reliable. And the most important - both are cheapest I can get - $0.31/rd
Yeah I like the Norma too. Just ordered a bunch of their .223 and I imagine they’ll be good too. I also noticed they’re soft points, which is solid for defense.
