First time cleaning a firearm?

There are a lot of first-time gun owners this year, and they’re learning a lot: grip, stance, ammo size and laws just to name a few. After the honeymoon phase of purchasing a new gun wears off, one of the big questions new gun owners start asking is how often should I clean my gun? And then, HOW do I clean my gun? What tips do you have for cleaning a firearm for the first time?
