Regarding front sight focus this is my opinion. I don’t remember reading this anywhere before, so this is just my opinion:
Alignment of the front sight on target dials you in left and right. Alignment of the rear sight with the front sight on target dials you in up and down. Since the human body is longer up and down, I consider the rear sight alignment significantly less critical for self defense.
That seems like a plausible theory. However I notice that when I take that extra fraction of a second to see the front sight my groups are more centered left right and up down.
I do not try at all to align the front sight with the back sight when doing rapid fire. But I suspect my subconscious can utilize the extra information of actually seeing the sight instead of just focusing on the target to make some micro adjustments as I pull the trigger.
That is very interesting. I read in several places about SD ammo being different from training ammo.
I did my own testing and to be honest I did not felt any difference within the range of 75 ft (25 yards).
Same accuracy, same recoil, same feeling… perhaps different sound after shot was taken, but I don’t care about sound effects once I won’t be wearing ear protection during self defense.
I’ve been shooting 115gr and 124gr target ammo and 115gr, 124gr and 115gr +P, 124gr +P of SD ammo and all 6 got me the same result. If I mix them in the single magazine what I’m able to find out is +P ammo, based on the sound.
What really feels weird is 9mm 65gr ARX PREFERRED DEFENSE ammo. When I tested it I thought I got squib load.
You can call it flash shooting. It is something between sight shooting and point shooting. Instead of focusing on front sight you only see a shadow / contour of it, sitting over the target.
I was using this technique just before transitioning myself to red dot.
I’ve never tried the ultra light stuff. What I mostly notice is the subtle difference in feel of the 115 and 124 vs the 147. Hard to explain precisely but the 147 feels like more push but a little less snap to me.
yeah 147gr is a big difference and I’m not using it, because for me it’s just waste of money. I dropped 147gr idea as a SD ammo within first 2 or 3 boxes of it.
My favorite Speer ammo has 135gr that I’m thinking about trying… but I do not see any matching training ammo to compare.
But, to be honest … I’m happy with the ammo I has been using so far… so I will be still following my idea - shoot whatever is less expensive on the market withing my already established quality boundaries.
Got into a fight this afternoon @ the Car wash (self service spent $3.40 washing snow crap off the Jag) He yelled @ me to move my car (even though there were empty spaces on both sides of my ride (SH** Stoopid)
Guy comes up on me (I see him ,he takes a swing) glancing blow off my nose/cheek. For a really big guy he hit like a little girl, I grabbed him around the waste and picked his ass up and slammed him down on the Cinder Block and Stainless Vacuum Island ‘CRANG!’ A huge White dude runs over to see if I am ok LAUGHING his ass off! Dumb guy is bleeding profusely from a couple of wounds to the forehead , Nose and his eyes are rolled back in his head.(Stainless steel will do that!) I said ‘What’s so funny?" to my rescuer?’ He said the guy was so big and… what? (I was so round?) Then you picked him up like a sack of Potata’s (that’s how it sounded,) But “YOU GROWLED!” GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! … I did? He also said I took the punch and didn’t even back up… Just because you are HUGE doesn’t mean you are tough!
So, NO Jerzees, I’m NOT over-coat dude.
Don’t mess with the Wild Weasel. Oh, and KARMA appeared, a Cop was at the Wendy’s next door and saw the whole thing. Blasted over to us, Hooked the asshole up and dragged his ass to his squad car.
See ya Jerk wad.
Now he can tell all his Chico’s in the clink, he got his cojones handed to him by a ‘Fluffy White Guy!’
Call me a wimp but if several dozen people came charging at me I’d be running past over coat dude making him look like he was standing still:)
Now if the crowd left me no route to escape I would try my best to take as many of them with me as I could but I don’t like those odds. Think Sun Tzu would approve of trying to live to fight another day.
I won’t go into much detail of the last fight I was in, other than alcohol was involved at a party and a mid 20s punk thought he had the rights to anything in my pockets.
I’m mid 40s (at the time) dad bod, and I guess looked like a victim?
Once the police hauled him off to the hospital, I apologized to the homeowner for the blood, and offered to help clean.
Punks friends wouldn’t even make eye contact with me until my ride got there.
Back story on why I was even there; coworker was trying to get me out of the house about a year after my divorce and playing wingman trying to get me some action……
That was NOT the action either of us were looking for that night!
Edit, to clarify, the majority of partygoers were 30-40+ and just a handful of younger.
It’s sad today Brother
Even if you try to do everything correctly’ Asshats still try to ruin the day.
Just cleaning my cars, mindin’ my own, and here came trouble…
FAFO in real time
Happy to come out ahead with just a sore schnozzola!
Find a range that has competitive shooting events. Join in, nothing makes it more realistic than to feel the adrenaline of competition and the reality of winning or losing. When I shot competition I hung out with the masters, not those in my class. Eventually I made master.
Did it take awhile, yes. But it was worth it, yes. I learned from the best, copied the best, and soon became one of them. You’ll never know your true skill level until you go up against others.
