If your pocket book allows buy more than one gun. Ammo can be found but it is higher right now. Buy a few boxes.
You can find ammo but it will cost. Outdoor Limited. Aim Surplus. Ammunition Depot have all had recently. Get on email notifications if your comfortable with that. Buying the gun at this point I feel is how valuable your safety and your families/others around you is to you
Just my .02
Buy another gun like a 10mm or 40 that has ammo available. Youâll have protection right now. You can always find the âone you really wantâ when the situation changes.
IMO, if you already have a serviceable firearm, no need to purchase another. If youâre sitting there with no means of protecting yourself, get one and pay 5x normal price for ammo.
He can go online and buy ammo, like Gunbroker. Itâs expensive but plentiful.
If the gun is a decent price, buy it. As far as ammo goes, there are on-line auction sites that still have auctions closing much cheaper than the large on-line retailers. It will still cost four or five times what it dis before Covid hit us, but it is out there. I recently picked up 1,800 rounds for $800 (including taxes and shipping). Most of that was Federal 9mm 115 grain. Prepare to buy 500 to 1,000 rounds at a time. Most of the time it will be brown box or plain white box. And be prepared to lose a lot of auctions if you want to keep the price low. But it is out there. That is a lot of cash to dump out at one time, but if you have a couple of friends looking to ammo at the same time you can split it up and share the cost.
At the gun shop about three weeks ago. They had .22 LR ammo on the shelves, priced the same as it used to be before March 2020 and the Pandemic. They were also selling firearms they had in stock. I special ordered a .22 handgun from Ruger, and it arrived three weeks later. Now, I just need to wait to see how long it takes for the state to complete my background check. Good luck to your friend.
As many have already noted, your friend should buy the firearm. And buy 3 if he can (handgun, shotgun, rifle/carbine). âThe best gun in a gunfight is the one you have with you.â Truer words never spokenâŠ
Re ammo, itâs available with an easy internet search if your LGS is out. There are plenty of suppliers out there that still have ammo even if others donât. Youâll just have to pay more for awhile due to the panic buying that started last spring and really ramped up last summer. Iâm sitting on 20,000+ rds of rifle and pistol ammo, and still replacing it with more than I shoot even at the current prices. Thatâs how you build a stockpile. Itâs the same way you save money.
Lastly, as a friendly note, unless youâre ex-military or in the service right now, try to avoid referring to your gun as a âweaponâ in company that is anti-2A. The antis and other snowflakes use language like that to âotherâ the pro-gun folks. Donât give them an edge against us. Instead, just call it a gun/firearmâŠ
If I search long & hard, I can find decent prices on firearms. Ammo is another story. I have cut my target ammo to 100 rounds per range visit, It;s enough to stay minimally sharp
For every âcan I afford to?â Question involving your familyâs safety there is a âcan I not afford to?â Rebuttal.
It really is a balancing act.
Just sayinâ
This is a question we have to repeatedly ask ourselves and (for many) often get creative with finding affordable and adequate solutions if itâs possible.
Albert,
Ammo is available. It just costs a lot, lot more.
I think the better question to ask him is âWhat price are you willing to pay to defend yourself?â

I would look at .40 cal handguns. IMHO, with 9mm youâre competing with the military for ammo.
-
Use the app AmmoSeek to find ammo on line. I just bought 1,200 rounds of .40 and 1,000 rounds of 5.56.
Prices are up, but you only need a few hundred. Of this is your first gun, PRACTICE! You donât want to be in learning mode in a stressful moment.
Yes, buy the gun. Hang out and meet some of the people that hang around ranges or gun shops and you will find someone who is willing to get you some ammo. If you are the type that would not help someone like this with SOME ammo, then you either didnât buy enough to begin with, or you are a detriment to the shooting culture.
This might sound stupid to some but get your firearm! Then go get a air pistol or air AR cartridges and BB are cheap the guns are 100 to 200 dollars. Real close like shooting the real thing use for practice to keep muscle and brain working. Itâs getting hard to find a 22LR even!
I am sorry that you have come late to this fight I would buy a weapon and not stop searching for the ammunition I would check with any one of your friends to even get enough to fill the clip and maybe some of our members could share a clip number I also carry a solid one can and have trained with it I am a man 7ty I can tell him you one thing donât look helpful if you look weak someone may Challenge you
Find a trainer they are free YouTube on this program but train
Oorah
Get the gun. Go online and find the ammo⊠Itâs there, itâs just not cheap anymore and it wonât for a while.
My suggestion to you would be buy the gun and get online to find ammunition. The ammo you would be looking for probably wonât be in stock but get on the notify me when in stock list.
9 mm ammo can be bought online on several sites that I use like MidwayUSA & Ceeperthendirt. Search the internet for them they can be found.
I have no worries about ammo as I have close to 5000 round of all my calibers 300 bblackout, 9 mm ,45 acp ,308 ,223 , 556 , 22 , 357 etc etc.
The title:: Is it worth buying a weapon today?
Yes by all means, a Zebra 701 Stainless Steel Pen is great for sticking in ones neck.
Now if your question is :: âIs it worth buying a Firearm today?â the point⊠Itâs always a good day to buy a Firearm.
Perhaps though you should guide your friend in this department. The Ammo will comeâŠ
Last January exactly, for me, I saw a cloud. I purchased over eight Firearms before May. Iâm not going to describe nor boast. As well as over 2k rounds for each, not enough, but have enough now. Yes as one would imagine it got costly towards May. BLOWN away about the fact that my STOCK, Firearms and Ammo, are worth PILES now.
Albert⊠Help your Friend out and perhaps let him discharge some of your Firearms or your Family / Friends Firearms so he can make a good decision.
I do not mean any disrespect to anyoneâs knowledgeâŠ
The Ammo will come, It is pricey now. BUT, one who is active in Firearms will find an avenue.
I could âstory off about some 22LRâ I was looking for and found HEAPS, but I wonât.
If your friend has a Firearm that he likes and is comfortable with, and can use proficiently, then by all means buy. Ammo will comeâŠ
Itâs been mentioned above, Ammo Seek⊠I have used them, no issues. GunBroker as wellâŠ
NowâŠ, And I might get hated on this, Guys behind the gun counter at your local BIG store⊠QuestionâŠ
Buying Guns & Ammo online , Your Country Mom & Pops Gun / Sportsmanâs Store
If the Firearm is âgood and comfortableâ donât disregard it because of AmmoâŠ
As well, myself, I donât call my Firearm a weapon. I call it a FirearmâŠ
The only case perhaps is âexotic ammoâ. Sounds like this is not that caseâŠ
Tell your friend to get training, buy the gun, practice dry-fire drills, be on the lookout for range ammo. And buy insurance.
