Is a revolver better than a semi-auto for self defense

Statistics are statistics. I questioned this subject myself and there are good points in this video.

So, what are your thoughts on this.

I think, like with most things, there isn’t one right answer.

Statistically, the vast majority of us will never need a gun in self defense. Statistically, the small number of us that ever do will end the encounter without firing a shot. Statistically, the very few of us that do need to fire a shot will end the encounter in two or three shots. So yes, for the majority of people, living agerage lives, doing relatively low risk, typical daily activities, a revolver should be more than sufficient.

This is exactly why I feel fine carrying one on a daily basis as I go to work and home. During daytime. On roads through quiet suburban areas. With no civil unrest.

However, there are times when statistics don’t matter. Maybe a revolver is fine for the typical American who doesn’t have a dangerous job or go to dangerous places at dangerous times. There are a lot of people who don’t fit that profile. Tow truck drivers, process servers, 7-11 night employees, etc, all have dangerous jobs, and are much more likely to encounter bad guys, in multiples, who may not be stopped by 2-3 shots. For them, more rounds on board only makes sense, as long as they can conceal the weapon and carry it without trouble.

Lately, home invasions seem to be with multiple invaders. This is one situation where I would never want just a revolver. I saw a statistic recently that the majority of defensive gun uses now happen at home. This is where much better firepower comes into consideration, and concealment isn’t an issue the same way. For the home, it’s not pistol vs revolver, it’s handgun vs long gun.

I still don’t see reason why revolver is better than semi auto pistol.

Statistics are great info that each of us must take under consideration and train and practice the way that gives the least chance of failure.

I value semi auto more than revolver
because I don’t like revolvers, I feel less comfortable shooting them meaning I’m more defenseless with revolver than semi auto.

If I know when semi auto may not work as expected, I train myself to avoid such situations and how to fix any issues on the fly.

I’m willing to forego any perceived “advantage” a revolver might provide if I am ever in a situation where I need a firearm for self defense, just for the increased number of available rounds, the relative ease of inserting new rounds (reloading), and my optic. Comes down to personal preference and how comfortable you are with your choice I guess.

TRUTH! It’s all about CHOICE (Personal choice). If you don’t like Revolvers (prefer Semi’s) Please follow your heart. And visa versa. No one can determine (through ‘stats’) what’s best for you. They don’t know YOU!

My opinion is I like BOTH!, Comfortable with all my Guns. As long as they are ready to rock IF anything happens (and I don’t have my head up my butt) I’M READY. My ‘city’ is so friggin’ dangerous right now and my job requires me to be in it part of the time I need to be secure in all my weapons I carry and my Tradecraft that I employ. Any hesitation or doubt could get any of us dead. And now dropping Rail Crews off in these desolate remote crossings there is more then just Humans to present danger to me and my guy’s. A pack of Coyote’s the other night gave the boy’s a scare but before I knew it my gun was in my hand ready. Didn’t even think about it (That’s Training). I was reading a September USCCA CC mag yesterday and I was shocked about how almost every article was on folk’s taking their personal security lightly. ‘Ah, I don’t think about a quality holster or carry just a Kel Tec because
yadda Yadda’. Thinking like that will get me killed.

It’s all about choice once again. ‘How do you want to leave this existence?’ I prefer @ a much older age in my bed not at the hands of some POS who got the drop on me. But that’s just me.:joy:

HEY NOW!!! WATCH YOUR MOUTH, ROBOGUNNER!! I like my KelTec.

Kidding, Brother. You know I love you. You can say what you want.

Too many good points for both sides already stated. Purchase what you are comfortable with and train with it until you are as proficient as you feel you need to be, then train more.

I doesn’t matter what you brand you carry as long as you are confident and proficient with the weapon and it is reliable enough to go “PEW” when you need it to go “PEW.”

I’ve looking into getting a YC9 “YEET CANNON” for my daughter. She’s about 70% Liberal, but she wants a Yeet Cannon.

I really like semi’s but, due to my disabilities, A revolver is easier for me to minipulate. So I carry and train with them and I have backup (long gun) if needed.

About 10 years ago I would say the revolver was a great choice, but now with the development of semi autos and more capacity with their magazines, a semi auto is a better choice, especially with multiple suspects. Now that mentally deranged and terrorists using ARs and AK 47s, usually spraying people with automatic rounds, a semi auto is a better response! More firepower than just 6 rounds! I CCW with a sig Sauer P 365, a great shooting semi auto!

Don have you ever shot a semi auto with a light trigger pull? 3 to 4 pound pull? You would be surprised at how easy it is to shoot and have more shots in the magazine.!

trigger pull isn’t a problem, slide manipulation is my weakness. Only having one functional hand and a permanently dislocated shoulder. Make working the slide difficult.

Whatever I have the most confidence in would be my first choice. FWIW, 1911s and S&W DAs are what I have confidence in.
