Immigration agents arrest Palestinian student who helped lead Columbia

Why aren’t we talking about this, its really big news. In my opinion it might be justified if what is said about him is true but its still a very slipery slope. too slippery me thinks.

what do you guys think.

do you support his detention?

I do not, if he committed a crime charge him for the crime and allow due process to take place. As it stands he is being held for exercising his 1st Amendment and even though he is a Green Card holder and not a citizen he is still protected by the US Constitution and deserves due process. And if the Federal Government can ignore parts of the Constitution for one person, they can for everyone.

I couldn’t tell from the article. If he is criminally violent he should be detained. If all he did was peacefully protest, no.

Not necessarily, we have done it in the past for terrorists and other such people. From what I understand he is being accused of being like this for supporting Hamas in pro Palestine protests being considered a terrorist organisation by the United States. Ironically Jews have protested in support of him after he was detained which is surprisingly wholesome.

I do not support bypassing due process for people accused of terrorism either, if they are a terrorist they should be charged and have their due process. My reason being is all it takes is some Liberal President to claim I am a domestic terrorist for having x amount of firearms, then the Federal Government can lock me up, throw away the key and everybody pats themselves on the back for getting a dangerous Domestic Terrorist off the streets without ever having to go through the courts and prove that I actually did something wrong. We have a justice system for a reason and it should be used whenever someone is accused of a crime.

I completly agree, I’m just pointing out that it can be done in the case of say. someone who is considering a bombing.

Even then though the person should be apprehended and face due process, it would be unwise for the Federal Government to just take that person to their Nation of Origin and release them. I don’t want a terrorist running around the world free, where they can plot against the US from whichever country they came from. They should spend 30 years in a Federal Prison and then when they are old and senile dropped off in their Nation of Origin. The only reason I could see the Government wanting to bypass the legal system for a person accused of terrorism is because they don’t believe they could get a conviction so they just deport them and claim they deported a dangerous terrorist which should make everyone raise an eyebrow.

Green card holder can have green card revoked at any time by presidential order. This is out of the judicial branches purview. Strictly executive branch purview. He has no 1st amendment right as a non citizen. Support of a terrorist organization is a no no.

Appropriate for noncitizens who aren’t on a path to citizenship

He was enjoying a permit to stay in this country temporarily as long as he adheres to the agreement he made when he received his permit. He broke the agreement by openly supporting publicly recognized terrorists and enemies of our country. Also organized and led protests of our countries inaction in regards to Palestine. For me it’s a no brainer. He isn’t afforded the rights of a citizen of the U.S. Good call and message sent.

Incorrect, unless the section of the US Constitution specifies Citizen then that section covers everyone within a US Border or Territory no matter their legal status. The 1st Amendment like the 2nd uses the term People and not Citizen so those cover everyone. Unfortunately our Government has used the fear of undesirables possessing firearms to erode our 2nd Amendment rights by enacting Unconstitutional firearm laws that infringe on our rights to “protect” us from so called undesirable people possessing firearms. Looking at you Mel Gibson, you got screwed by your Government.

Absolutely, would you rather have a terrorist sitting in a cell for 30 years or walking free in the world plotting an attack on the US? It’s money well spent to keep them in prison.

Actually, a rope would be even more cost effective.

Your argument about the constitution going beyond American citizens is wild! A fundamental disagreement for sure. Regardless of that opinion, you can not disagree that he agreed to act a certain way and that the government could void his permit at any time if they deemed it necessary. That he understood these terms and agreed to them.

Remember sometimes the only difference between a Patriot and a Terrorist is which Party controls the White House. I don’t want to end up hanging from a rope with no due process just because a President called me a terrorist. With both Democrats and Republicans we would go through a lot of rope in this country.

Why is it wild? It’s taught in basic High School Civics, for sections that applied only to citizens the Founding Fathers used the term Citizen, where People was used it covers everyone. Remember when this country was founded it was not uncommon for people from the French territories and Spanish territories that are today part of the United States to travel to the newly formed US for trade, they didn’t surrender their firearms when they came for a visit. It’s also why the United States has always been a Beacon of Freedom for the rest of the world because even foreigners have the same rights while in the United States or US territory. Our Constitution was truly radical for the time period of it’s inception.
