Hypothetical situation: Do you use lethal force to help a stranger?

@Luci. I am not 100% positive but I’m thinking Cabellas and BassPro sell the Gel

@Luci Oh it may not but it should. If not just about every year’s time is good. It’s unlike ammunition where if kept in a dry area it would store forever. I have fired ammunition that was manufactured during World War II and probably everyone else has also.

Well first you have to determine if this is an actionable assault. One has to determine in a short period of time the threat level. Is this a couple? Is the man with the weapon a true threat to the woman’s safety? Or is he just trying to use it as a intimidation? In any case keep a safe but actionable distance, even if you have to use deadly force. After the assailant is stopped the female could turn on you. Of course Dial 911 let them know what has happened and keep them on the phone till Police arrive. So yes take action, however don’t rush in to be the hero without firstly assessing the situation.

Indiana state law says that we can use deadly force to help a 3rd party, however this is a tricky situation. You don’t have a moral obligation to intervene, but in my state it seems you can legally. I would caution that the same rules do apply as if you use a gun to defend yourself. There is a chance you will be arrested and that are a lot of variables that have to be considered, sometimes it’s best just to say back and be a good witness and other times you need to intervene. I think the situation comes down to personal choice and still the 3 rules apply. Weapon, intention, and delivery system.

Brand new to the program, and this is my very 1st chat. Already so much to think about. My instincts would also have been to help the woman, but now I see that could have been a grave error, literally and figurativly. Absolutely most definitely would have called law enforcement while I assessed the situation.

Welcome to the group @Anolagay!
That’s one of the things I love about this group… it gets us to think things through from more than one direction, consider all the aspects. Really important to our mental training.

Whether it’s being used as an intimidation tool or the plan is to injure/kill from the start the law and proper response are the same.

If there’s an imminent/immediate threat of grave bodily harm or death the use of deadly force is justified.

You would be within your rights to intervene in either case although you might reasonably treat the two situations somewhat differently in planning and executing your response.

No because I don’t know who is the bad guy and who is the good guy. I would call 911 and report it. However I live in Kalifornia and LA and SF would prosecute you no matter who is good and who is bad!!!

Not necessarily. Plenty of self defense shootings in L.A. County where the shooter doesn’t get prosecuted. However you are going to go through a financial and anxiety filled hell after a shooting. As the saying goes “The best shooting is the one that never happened.” As for me I’ll restrict the possibility to defending my immediate family and myself.

Unless, I see the altercation from the beginning, my initial reaction is going to be, call 911. Now if the altercation escalates and non police issued weapons are coming out, that will probably accelerate my decision making cycle.

I would love to say I am going to White Knight it, but unless I know the woman involved, or she is a minor, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that she is the victim. I am going to go for 911 first and proceed from there.

I am not saying that I won’t get involved but I am going to have to make a decision on whether I can live with the consequences. Whatever they may be.

Sorry to say this but in today’s sue about anything world I’d choose to call 911 and wait for them to respond. Any deviation from that protocol would be doubtful. Knowing that domestic assaults often end up going against the police I think waiting is best.
