How much SD ammo do you keep on hand?

I accidentally shot 25 rounds of my SD rounds. I didn’t realize it until loaded the ready and the first round got caught. So I cleared it and immediately thought it was my HP. Sure enough. I unload my mags and reloaded with FMJ. First time firing that gun. My wife’s gun. I stopped because the sights are off and I forgot my screw driver. I trie using my knife but didn’t want to mess up the sights or my knife. My hands were shaking a lot today as well. Not fun when that happens.

Not sure I understand what happened. Your first hollow point “got caught?”

I buy range ammo in bulk. Never had a problem with ammo shortages because of it. Also keep all my mags full of hollow points. Use up the hollows after a couple years. Restock as supplies get low.

I like to keep at least 250 rounds of self-defense ammo for each firearm. On a daily basis, I carry 2-12 round magazines with a chambered round, for a total of 25 rounds for my primary gun.

I shoot my self-defense ammo through my guns pretty often, just to make sure they are still cycling through just fine, starting with the oldest ammo first.

I keep 45 rounds of .40 for my EDC. I keep 15 rounds of 00 Buckshot on my Home Defense 12ga. next to my bed as well as my carry weapon on the nightstand. I have a few other firearms for hunting and varmint control in various places with plenty of ammo available for them.

3 magazines full sounds good in ordinary times. These aren’t ordinary times though.

Kalifornia has a 10-round limit.

Yeah… Cali residents MUST have a good reloading skills… otherwise they risk Main Jail. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I now load my practice ammo to factory specs as I do not practice as much due to ammo shortage, so I am always practicing with self defense strength cartridges. I keep as much as I can afford and I make a good living.

If your gun stops because a hollowpoint fails to feed, polish your feed ramp if it is a quality weapon. If it is el cheapo crappo, buy a better one. None of mine fail to feed hollow points, but all of mine are high quality.

I plan in getting lucky. I hope to have enough so I do not run out before they get me.

I am curious too. Is anybody aware that you can load your own ammo to factory specs with a hardcast lead bullet? And if it is a 45 ACP, it is already bigger than a 9mm hollow point will expand to, is heavier, and it hurts real bad. Even a 9mm loaded to factory speed is formidable. And inexpensive. I prefer factory hollow point wonder pills, but id all you have left is handloads, it beats throwing rocks.

That would be true if you lived in Chicago or Seattle, but here where I live you are more apt to have a run-in with a Bear than a two-legged Coyote.

and slightly dangerous.
