I still find shake awake to be great because those holosuns that have it have literally years of battery life and the battery can be replaced in seconds without having to remove the sight.
I had not heard of Cuda, I looked them up…I don’t see that it turns off when holstered?
“The dot automatically turns on when the sight detects motion and can turn off as fast as after two seconds of inactivity”
That article was from SHOT Show 2022 in January so it looks like they’ve made improvements since. The listing on OpticsPlanet mentions turning off when holstered and so does this video on their website.
According to the specs page. it has an accelerometer so it knows orientation and can sense motion. As far as I understand, Shake Awake can only detect motion.
That is not something I would want to guinea pig (in addition to the reliability of the optic itself).
So if I am holding it muzzle down, how does it know I’m doing that and not holstered? Maybe it will work great but I certainly would want a wide body of real world use feedback over a period before going with one given how proven Trijicon and Holosun already are
I have a Cuda and no amount of me holding it steady will ever shut it off. It has to be set down or holstered. I also have a Holosun and I don’t think I can get that to shut off in my hand either. I don’t carry with my Cuda but I love this feature if I did. It can always be disabled if you don’t like it.
Depends on your size, I’m 6’3" and change 260lbs, I regularly carry full size, got a OWB G40 Gen4 (10mm with 6" barrel) with Holosun HE507C-GR X2 that I can conceal easily.
Can even put another full size on the other side of my hip.
Depends on how you want to carry.
Weight might be the biggest factor, my G40 when i run it with a light, weighs 50oz.
Also former LE. If you are looking for quick acquisition of a sight picture another thing to consider is the XS sights that have a large dot front sight over a groved rear sight. The large front dot grabs your eye and you don’t have to deal with a large reticle hanging on the slide.
In my opinion a red reticle dot sight is great for Pistol matches but the less you have to go wrong on your gun the better and most defensive shootings are within 7 yards.
I’m currently working with either a gen 1 and gen 3 Glock 19 with an IWB holster.
A lot of the current red dots go 30k to 50k hours. No real need for auto on/off and something else to go wrong. Change your battery on a regular basis.
But my Glock is tight enough with the IWB holster without a reticle on it.
If I went with a reticle red dot sight, I would have to go with an OWB holster thanks to my thin frame. That cuts down on concealment and risks a barrel poking out from under my shirt.
The other thing that I have taken into consideration is the fact that I am recently retired from a profession that has seen it’s fair share of second guessing and criticizing the officers choice of weapon/ accessories. The plaintiff’s attorney in a defense shooting scenario will do everything they can to label you as a Tackelberry gun nut. A reticle sight is something that is great for quick acquisition, I’ve tried one out before on a rifle before, but it can and most likely will be used against you also in the crazy legal arguments wielded by some attorney.
All that being said, think about it. What might work for me might not work for you and vice versa.
I think you might be pleasantly surprised if you actually try one. An RMR adds virtually nothing for IWB concealment IME, and even at 7 yards, a red dot is simply superior for getting fast accurate hits on target. Don’t be too quick to assume.
I’m not a lawyer and can’t and won’t give legal advice, but, I do not worry in the slightest about court defense of a tool that lends itself to more accurate fire from a defensive firearm.’
I completely agree that what might work for one might not work for another, but, if you haven’t tried, you don’t know.
So, after research, I have decided on a Sig P365 XL optic ready. Thanks for all the input. I realize this is a 9mm luger round and NOT a .40; but I think it is going to be excellent.
