@Orpackrat. That’s how we trained in the Army. I have no idea why I wrote that I read that. I meant that we trained that way in the military.
We used to train in the Army at night to handle flares this way. When the enemy sends up a flare, close one eye only. That way when the flare fizzes out you still have one eye adjusted to the dark.
The turn this conversation took is very interesting. I saw someone doing this in a movie a while back and wondered if it was BS. I’m learning new things every day from you all!
Thanks for the great conversations! Keep it up!

New toy for finding people, HD Thermal Tracker
@Orpackrat. How much did that set you back? I used night vision goggles in the Army.
@KillJoy approximately $750 by the time I was done and that was for a Pelican Case for it plus a 2 bay smart lipo charger and 8 rechargeable CR123A batteries as well.
I have used a weapon mounted light but only for military use. I use handheld light for a few reasons. First, I can change the intensity(hi, med, low, strobe, sos) and direction(wide to narrow) of light. For example, the light I use has 5 different light settings by a click of the button. Second, the perpetrator does not know where the vital organs are compared to weapon mount. I can change from being high to low to mid with hand. Third, if I am clearing/sweeping my house i can use the handheld compared to pointing the muzzle at a loved one. The only time I will ever clear/sweep my house is if somebody is between me and a loved one. I practice this once a week with unloaded pistol usually one of my wife’s and also switch between strong hand to weak hand around corners.
I was going to ask about house clearing, @MilVet, but you answered my question with the next sentence.
I agree with you, the only reason I’ll clear a house if I need to get to a loved one. I don’t train that way often (my kids are adults and live on their own), but I really should continue to practice in case they stay over. Plus, I’ve added dogs to the mix over the last 6 months… They may help or be a hinderance.
Yes, I do have a pure breed GSD that gets in the way sometimes and most part stays by my side.
I’ve got a pure breed GSD as well, he’s almost 5 months old. We have done some training with both my GSD and Pit bull. We’re thinking about some additional defensive training with the GSD at least, but he’s such a goofball…
Here’s a new Into the Fray about Flashlights!
I thought about it, however it’s hard enough finding holsters for newer model pistols without adding WML/Laser attachments. Maybe down the road when more holster options are available to me, until then I’m using a Bushnell 1000 850 lumen tactical flashlight with pocket clip. Unfortunately I’m finding it gets in the way a lot. I need to get off my arse and order a belt sheath that’ll fit it.
