What kind of snake is this? He was on the sidewalk right near my house. Someone on a bike just before me had run over him just before I came upon him.
A dead one?
I couldn’t resist. I have not had much experience with snakes, so I don’t know.
I’m not a snake expert by any stretch but Eastern diamondback rattlesnake would be my guess. Though it is a little hard to say for sure in its flattened state.
One word of caution, snakes are known to be able to strike for some time even after they are dead so it is best not to get too close to even the dead ones.
Thanks. That’s what I thought it was. Enough people have replied to this thread talking about misidentifying snakes that it made me question myself. I don’t consider myself knowledgeable about snakes, but I have made an effort to learn to recognize the venomous ones that live around me. I had put this one as a young Eastern Diamondback. It’s identical, right down to the head stripes and patterns, to the picture my daugter showed me of the one they cleared out of her Panera. This one was right near my house, so they’re out there where people live.
