Promotional ammo is loaded for a certain price point and components change as costs change.
WWB and UMC are good examples of this.
I’ve shot very dirty WWB and amazingly clean UMC, and a few years later very clean WWB and terribly dirty UMC
Like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, you never know exactly what you’re going to get!
I guess I am an ‘ammo snob’ because I don’t use practice ammo at all.
Back many years ago in police work, we trained with the duty ammo we carried in our guns. The theory was that there would be no unexpected surprises with the way your duty weapon handled on the range and on the street.
Now, at almost 71 years old, I still shoot that way today, and yes, it is a LOT more expensive. But there is truth to the saying about an old dog learning new tricks… . Buying bulk helps, but it’s still an expensive habit.
That’s the direction my agency at the time went in the late 1970’s. It’s nice when the County is flipping the cost
I’m kind of a ammo snob. I won’t shoot anything made in China or Russia. I believe the important thing is you should shoot the same grain for practice as for carry such as I shoot any 230 FMJ .45ACP for carry I use Federal HST 230 grain JHP +P. Only the best for personal protection.
I refuse to use anything steel cased. In my personal experience it has a tendency to malfunction. I’m running few different EDC 1 SW 6906
2 SW sd9ve
3 SW shield 40 w/night site
4 SW bodyguard 380 w/laser used as backup weapon
For range, I usually shoot whatever I stock on when it’s on sale. Except Winchester White Box - it’s the only bullets I’ve had an issue with, because they somehow managed to crush the case on several rounds that were in a brand new box.
Ahhh. The good ole days…
I will not use ANY of the Chinese or Russian stuff. Quality is all over the place, ammo is very dirty. Buddy got a “deal” years ago on Chinese 7.62x39. One round would go BANG and eject the case into the next county, the next (from the same box, would go “pop” and the case would land a couple feet away, a third round would go “Bang” and through the case 7-10 ft (basically normal for his rifle. At 300 yards it would consistently place 1-2 round out of 10 on Paper (not necessarily on “target”). Not for me. He’d paid like $2 for a box of twenty (and it was grossly overpriced at that:smirk:.
Don’t use any steelcase ammo or anything I find too dirty. I reload so it has to be brass cased and boxer prime. Other than that I just try to stay with similar bullet weights and recoil for Target ammo. Sometimes if the price is right I may buy a different bullet weight but that’s about it.
I will buy most anything that’s cheap but for Hunting or SD I use only Hornaday.
I had to add… And some Underwood Ammo.
I somewhat agree… steel case 7.62x39 Steel case SEEMS to run good and without damage in old AK’s and SKS’s. Otherwise I want Brass cases.
Roger that sir. Since I wrote that post, I have been tempted. I am a fan of the 6.5 Grendel. It is still very hard to find that caliber. There is still some steel cased Grendel out there. I have so far resisted the temptation. Lol
Color me jealous…
Banned on most indoor ranges. Can lead to sparks and fires.
I dont buy Hornady brand because the CEO wanted to medically coerce his employees.
I stocked up looong before that crap went around. Doesn’t mean they don’t make the best ammo around for my needs. Besides, do you really think they care?
What ever happened with that? I don’t remember the outcome.
oh for sure they dont care. No matter, I cant forget the force-vaxxer and how he threatened to fire employees.
A good overview of the letter.

Not super picky but will not use any steel case ammo. Aluminum okay.
