Amazon Cutting Off Second Amendment Author from Being Able to Sell His Book

A respected, self-published Second Amendment author reports that Amazon no longer allows new copies of his books to be sold, only used ones, directly denying him to be compensated for his work.

“Note that Amazon has shut down new copy sales of The Origin of the Second Amendment and The Founders’ View of the Right to Bear Arms by limiting access to my publishing storefront, Golden Oak Books,” David E. Young informed his readers on his On Second Opinionblog in December. Any links to Amazon on this page or on my web page, secondamendmentinfo.com, or elsewhere will no longer show sales of new copies from the publisher (these are self-published books). Only used copies are available from Amazon or elsewhere.”

Young includes links to both, and they both only allow customers to “Buy Used.”

That should be of concern to all gun owners who believe in the value of authentic Second Amendment scholarship. As noted in an interview this correspondent conducted with Mr. Young in 2008, “Origin contains relevant material literally transcribed from newspaper articles, editorials, broadsides, pamphlets, speeches, proceedings, and amendment proposals that directly or indirectly relate to the Second Amendment and its adoption as part of the U.S. Bill of Rights,” and “The Founders’ View traces … the most relevant American characters, comments, actions, and resolutions that resulted in development and adoption of the Second Amendment as part of the Bill of Rights.”

The Second Amendment community is not the only one that values Young’s work. The legal community, from the very top, also views it as authoritative:

The Origin of the Second Amendment was cited six times in Justice Antonin Scalia’s majority opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court in the Washington D.C. vs Heller case [and] has been cited in two Circuit Court of Appeals cases to document the individual rights nature of the protection afforded by the Second Amendment.

We’re not talking some slouch hack writer – we’re talking about a recognized authority now being denied the ability to be remunerated for his extensive, original scholarship by the largest online commerce platform on the planet. And it’s not like Young has violated any rules. The only restrictions Amazon had placed on self-publishers is a three-per-day limit on Kindle titles over concerns that unscrupulous “authors” are submitting AI manuscripts.

Wanting to know why Young is being denied, I sent a query to Amazon Publisher Services on Wednesday, along with Young’s blog post about not being able to sell new copies:

I will be writing this up on AmmoLand.com, a popular website frequented by a “vast audience of firearms enthusiasts.” Will you please provide a for-the-record response on why this is and what Amazon will do to allow him to continue to sell his work?

That resulted in a non-relevant auto-response:

Thank you for your interest in Amazon Publisher Services. If your site is eligible for our services, a member of our team will contact you.

No human response has been received at this writing, and if one is forthcoming, this post will be updated.

In the meantime, gun owners who wish to be informed with some of the most authoritative research on what text, history, and tradition meant to the Founders can order these books directly from Young the old-fashioned way:

The Origin of the Second Amendment may be ordered directly from the publisher, Golden Oak Books, by regular mail and payment by check or money order only. Paperback copies are $35.00 each and hardcover copies are $95.00 each postpaid. Michigan residents must include 6% state sales tax (total prices for MI residents would be $37.10 or $100.70 per copy, respectively).

Copies of The Founders’ View of the Right to Bear Arms – A Definitive History of the Second Amendment are available by direct mail order from the publisher, Golden Oak Books (check or money order payment only). The mail order price is $35.00 postpaid, and Michigan residents must add 6% state sales tax (total $37.10).

Mail orders must be paid by check or money order only and sent by mail directly to the publisher at:

Golden Oak Books
605 Michigan Street
Ontonagon, MI 49953

Some will no doubt focus on the price. These books represent years of painstaking research and labor. The information presented is invaluable and the cost of producing limited run copies is great. They are essential additions for the collections of serious Second Amendment defenders interested in advocacy based on history and the Constitution.

Since there are MANY similar books on the subject for sale on Amazon, I can’t help but wonder if there is more to the story.

I Haz a Question (or three): (serious question, not snark). IS AMAZON the cabal?—seems to me certain Entities/companies make it clear that ‘FREEDOM’ is NOT part of their business model. Shopping Malls come to mind right away where they expect us to be unarmed (DISARMED) Sheep to the slaughter. Maybe that is why they are all mostly dying on the vine huh? I won’t start a ‘LIST’ I don’t need to remind y’all who is Bad and who is Good (we all know already) But it just seems as this New year came around these folk’s make these glaring decisions that basically slit their own Financial throats. Is that by design or unconscious? And yes I’m thinking of the NRA and USCCA with certain business decisions that baffle me still today. With the NRA for example the Nepotism and faux Loyalty to a Criminal Thief (Lapierre) it’s glaring once again their NEW decisions and Policies align almost to the letter what old Wayne was doing for decades—and no one has been able to stop them so they continue to slide into obscurity. They continue to vote in ‘Loyalists’ to the Big W (and it’s mostly these Fossils who should have been ‘Pasteurized’ a long time ago). Known Crim’s themselves. The USCCA then makes these ’Conscious’? decisions to HAWK their Merch with their ‘logo’s’ all over them when by design they are an Insurance Company for ‘CONCEALED CARRY!’ How do they justify telling us Gunner’s to be essentially ‘Grey Man’ with Tee shirts, Bags, Patches and Window clings Shouting ‘Hey I have a friggin’ Gun? Makes no sense. And I HAVE TO go there about the rate increase when they are already making buckets of money on us already in an economy that makes it REALLY hard to just give them our Credit Card number for a really high Annual fee? I went (for example) from Platinum to Gold, from Annual one time payment to monthly just to justify the cost and then getting HIT with that rate increase ?…I was voicing my concerns that it was getting too pricy to stay and their response was basically ‘We provide tier One services and Programs, Top of the line Training yadda, yadda, yadda ‘ yet then I hear of the ‘Perks’ they gave themselves (New Corporate Offices, and all the ‘Beni’s’ that go with that). Hey I get it you work hard you should be rewarded, Everybody don’t have to live like a Monk. But that rate increase and those Training video’s (that are often LAME) just don’t make sense to me. Not when folk’s are struggling to make ends meet.

Sorry for the rant but it’s been a long time coming (@ least for me) while the Country does this REBOOT I have LET SOME STUFF GO that were staples in our life (some just because the cost out weighs the result).

Because of the last (4) years I went from living large to really watching my expenses. My fault? Prolly. but when times are good I lived well. When times are tough you gotta let sh!t go. I’d LOVE to buy a $100 Book, but today that ain’t happening

YAAAA! I am sure people will think about that expenditure sure will. In these trying times I was SERIOUSLY considering REJOINING US (Just in Case is shouting in my ears!) I don’t want to be hung out to dry ‘in case’ I have a shoot! But I have to ask WILL THEY REALLY BE THERE FOR ME IF THAT HAPPENS? and the answers are…. I JUST DON’T KNOW—-and THAT bothers me.

I agree with you. Amazon does some strange things for sure.

There has to be more to it. I just searched Amazon for “second amendment book” and the results list was enormous. Hundreds or thousands of titles, and not just anti-gun type books from what I could tell, but a broad selection of Pro-2A literature. Also, Amazon has a huge selection of firearm accessories, optics, holsters, reloaders, and shooting-sports equipment. It doesn’t appear at all that they’re restricting firearm related merchandise and literature.

Personally, I’ve bought holsters (several), gun belts, speed loaders, snap caps, optics, mounts and other things I can’t even remember on Amazon.

Looks like this book was singled out

I weaned myself off Hollywood and TV last year. I watch very very little anymore. This year I’m working on Apple and Amazon, in that order.
