The Aftermath: When the Fight Comes to Your Neighborhood

Really    He is always going on and on about how half the country (DEMS) should be eliminated. You want to blame me for trying to trigger him. Are you familiar with the term “half-cocked”?

My wife loves shooting, she just cant do it anymore.

Her engagement ring was a ruger super Blackhawk in 44mag, I told her if she left me, a ring does no good so keeping the pistol. Then I got her a sig p229 in 40. She loved it.

Then the back surgeries came. She sold her guns. I was against it but they were hers.

After multiple more surgeries since, she cant shoot or hunt anymore. We are slowly getting her back to shooting. She doesn’t mind the 22’s and she’s shot my carry guns enough to where she’s confident but she physically cant do it unless she has to.

She’s a hugs type of girl vs a forceful type. At 5’1" and not big, alot of guys would like hugs and much more
that’s what worries me

All my wife’s shooting is done at indoor ranges. Carpal tunnel surgery on both hands made her anxious shooting. But, she overcome it after two trips.

I trained her to ambush, as opposed to what the airman did in the original post which falls in the category of,

"the best defense is offense."

Now you’re blaming God for your
 short comings? Tsk tsk.

Sorry, I shouldn’t have stooped to your level of humor.

Glad your wife overcame it bean. For us, it is what it is. After over a million (thank god for insurance) and I believe 8 back surgeries, my wife isn’t gonna be a competition shooter  .

She will grab a gun and defend her kid and dog though
funny how she never mentions me, hmm

She’s more of a diplomacy type of girl but she even knows that doesn’t always work.

we finally got most of the snow gone so my wife and the two dogs[ a newfy and a pyrenes] go for a walk out back on the farm and she always cary’s her boxer in 38spl due to the wolves following the deer that are moving north
that’s about the only fight in our neighborhood due to only 2 people per square mile up here

In view of what’s presented if I felt my family and other innocent lives were in imminent danger I would confront the suspect

I am an USAF veteran and was assigned to an Operations Unit and often carried dispatches to varying Air Force domestic and overseas units. I was also given training in the use of weapons since we might need to do so when carrying restricted dispatches. This was before the internet. I never had to be armed but I knew fully what was expected of me should that be necessary. It comes down to this: shoot for the body mass, not the arm or leg. Period. I assume this AF vet never got that training. Never-the-less he had to do what needed to be done.

AF Hubby/Dad did well, nice job!

Did 100s of raids in Detroit and saved by God’s Grace. Now I’m 77, carry and have enthusiasm for doing what’s right as always. It won’t be perfect
it’s always something. Upside is God is with me!

Living in Massachusetts I’d have no choice but to dial 911 and hold safe in my dwelling till help arrived

To exit my dwelling, confront an assailant and shooting him I’d bet I sadly would wind up in jail.

From today’s email

Under Iowa law, deadly force is justified in defense of others to prevent a forcible felony. Arson and aggravated assault with a firearm are both forcible felonies.

Question for those with more legal expertise here. In this incident the airman shot the assailant in the leg. From what I gather with video and in person training, would that not be questioned by a prosecutor as “were you really afraid for your life” in that you aimed for the leg (assuming that was the intent) versus high center mass?

Not questioning his decision but it falls in similar lines about firing warning shots into the air. Also leg shots are obviously a more difficult target and could lead to misses and collateral damage.

The situation described at the time was the airman only knew shots were being fired and some into his house? The question was what would I do knowing the information given with those few known variables. I would Make sure my family is in the safest and secured position possible. Arm my wife as she calls 911. Meanwhile, shots still being fired, threat target, time elapsed, weapons and distance evaluated, put my scoped 30.06 rifle into battery, (my EDC is already on my person). secure my position behind cover, neutralize the threat or threats. Display a makeshift white flag, announcing myself. Check threat’s situation, Secure all weapons. Check for wounded and KIA casualties. Render 1st aid. Then call USCCA. Wait, wait, wait for the Calvary.

Today’s email analysis opened with

“While much is not known about the sequence of events”

My guess is it wasn’t his intent.

Obviously my first responsibilities are to me and my family. Next would be to my nearest neighbors. As the perpetrator moved down the street and away from my immediate area I would.not desert my post (home/family) and try to "capture/neutralize " the subject. That’s the job of law enforcement or other armed citizens under direct threat from the criminal perpetrator. After the situation is resolved then my immediate duty is to report to the authorities and become the best witness I can be .

As a Florida resident I know what I would do if he/she was sending rounds into my home. Stop the threat to my family and myself. To those who think waiting for LEO would be more appropriate, you do what you think is best. What you do if instead of he/she wasn’t sending rounds through the walls of your house? Also, substitute if molotov cocktail’s or pipe bombs were being thrown at your house, then what? Obviously call 911 to report the incident. Ask for law enforcement and ambulance to respond to the incident, describe the threat, identify yourself as being the one who is under a deadly attack. Then call the USCCA crisis line for assistance. Say a prayer that no one in the house was injured, and hug your family. Any Florida Sheriff’s out there, please opine.

If this were to happen to me and my family I would mentally prepare myself for the worse case outcome get my wife and child to safe cover arm her with a weapon, yes she knows her way around a gun, then I would go find the shooter and neutralize the shooter if possible without taking his life. Depending my field of view or cover point, I presume either with my AR 15, or 45 acp carbine and my pistol. Like I said depends on where or how the advantage point looks. I pray I or anyone else will ever have to find themselves in any situations where you have to defend yourself and others from a active shooter. That is one of my greatest fears and one of the main reasons I carry a weapon. Anyways stay safe out there everyone.

As a Navy Veteran, I would have secured my family and made sure they were safe. Secondly, I would have been on the phone with the police as I was confronting the shooter. Sometimes situations escalate sooner than police or other emergency crews can arrive. Not trying to be a hero, but using my head and training.

I do believe veterans are well trained in every branch, and their skills and training shouldn’t be shunned against by law enforcement or politicians. The Airmen did the right thing. I would stand by him and fight.
