Here is Attorney DeWitt’s Review:
Domestic disputes present the worst situations in which to defend. This is what we know from the media:
• Legal: The man coming down the hallway with a gun was an immediate lethal threat, and the defender was justified in shooting him. That justification was buttressed by the existence of the attacker’s prior warrants and domestic violence. While it wasn’t smart of the defender to leave the scene, using a lawyer to help him sort out his statement to the police was.
• Tactical: A hallway is a terrible place to defend. It is the dictionary definition of a “fatal funnel.” A better plan would have been to close and barricade in a back room so as to get cover, but there was likely little time to do so.
• Training: The attacker’s rounds did not hit anyone. The defender’s did, which indicates he probably had some training.
