And when one of those rubber bands hits your eye protection causing you to flinch and fire a wild round off to who knows where? Safety rules exist for reasons. Stress training should be done with non-lethal training ammo under the supervision of qualified instructors.
Where are the safety violations? No one was in the line of fire. Nothing could hit the firearm. It was all conducted at a secure range by an instructor who regularly was hired by local departments and the State to train LEOs.
What is unsafe here?
I can sympathize. Itâs hard to find good help these days.
You want stress? Bring a shot timer with you to the range, face away from multiple targets that your training partner puts up for you behind your back and when the timer goes off have your partner screaming âTHREATâ next to you over and over again while pelting you with pebbles, brass and anything he can get his hands on until you clear all the bad guy targets.
I donât deal with self appointed âanyoneâsâ at any range I go to. They get a swift, polite but firm âYou have 3 seconds to get away from me.â. If they continue to interact with me I will have them thrown off the range. Iâm rather persuasive in this regards.
The whole thing is unsafe. Practicing quick draw with live ammo is never a good idea.
Having a rope flopping around next to the shooter where it could get caught on the firearm or holster.
A moving target on a wood cart? I will bet the stops were not inspected and certified for safety.
Youâd have a heart seizure with some of the drills my training partners and I doâŠ
The beauty of this is that no one has to participate in anything they consider âunsafeâ and what one person considers unsafe is another guyâs just another day at the range. Practicing âquick drawâ (damn that brings me back to last century cowboy films) with live ammo is common⊠no, REQUIRED! by folks that have enough experience/training to do so. The again, I also helped the local Sheriff dept in an investigation where a newbie shot himself in the ass while holstering a loaded weapon, totally HIS fault. Should that be prohibited too?
How about 3 guys shooting in different directions within one shooting bay with berms on 3 sides? How about guys shooting PAST each other? How about shooting at targets while you are tripped on purpose and are falling? All of these are common in advanced drills, that again, no one is forced to join but consenting adults aware of their abilities and potential risks do.
Itâs quite Ok to figure out what is unsafe for you, not to try to force your opinions on others. To each their own.
You are making a lot of fear based assumptions. The set up we were using wouldnât allow any of those things to happen.
Maybe you are fortunate enough to be able to afford simulated weapons that can accurately simulate recoil and confirm hits on target. I unfortunately cannot afford those things. And even if I could I would want to at least occasionally confirm that I can perform with my real defense tools as effectively as I can with the simulation toys. I do practice any new moves at home with my SIRT pistol and dryfire with my real pistol to make sure I can do them safely. But I donât trust that I have those skills down until I can confirm them with the real thing.
If I couldnât trust myself to act with reasonable safety in a controlled, simulated stress environment then I would have to seriously reconsider if I should be trusted to safely carry and deploy those tools in a real life, real stress, self defense event.
Though I agree that advanced training should not be done until one has proven themselves to be safe and competent with the basic skills. Our instructor did not move us to the more advanced drills until he had confirmed we could be trusted to act safely and responsibly.
That would be a cool drill. You could do all kinds of things with that. It would be fun just to build it, much less all the things you could add to it. Now Iâm sitting here wishing I had my own range.
WHAT HE SAID!!! Anything else is just âhopingâ and that is a poor plan, but unfortunately itâs what most folks have to settle for since they lack the facilities or available training to assert their competency.
Have you ever took such training? Because once you train this way then you can decide if this is safe for you or not.
This is not a basic stuff, but very safely setup scenario. To be honest I trained in less safe environments and never felt unsafe.
If you donât practice fast draw stoke with live ammo you will never find out what are you capable of ⊠unless you find yourself in such situation and unfortunately you are too slow⊠That might be your first and last draw strokeâŠ
I worked a high pressure job and would get stressed out. I went skydiving to release my stress.
There is nothing like saving your own life to make the other things feel small. Shooting under pressure is probably one of the things that could replicate that.
I have a whole bunch of ideas I would like to eventually try based on that cart setup. Just have been too busy these last couple of years putting my bank account and body back together from a little medical event I had. Plus I havenât found the right crowd yet to work on this stuff with. Though my son is getting to be just about the right age for helping me build and pull the cart:)
I am fortunate to have a lot of public land around to practice on. Though the number of smooth floored, cart friendly, accessible gravel pits in the area have been dwindling due to mines reopening and the forest service closing down access roads. Might have to drive further to find some more.
That is why I wish I had land for a range. You could put in a variable speed motor to pull it with a light cable. Put an airsoft gun in his hand with a moveable switch to make it fire at you at different places. Make it stop the assault for no fire drills. All kinds of things. That would be really fun.
Welcome to the community! Great comment!
Shooting you with a paint ball gun.
My son has an automatic nerf gun with a tweenty round belt. Not as painful as paintballs but might be almost as distracting.
Whatâs up with Jai-Reens and pain? I think if a gunny told you to take a butter knife and wave a red cape at a bull you would do it and win,
âAlright you Devil-Dogs letâs take this Phuckinâ HILL! (you mean like dat?)
