How would you handle someone breaking into your home in the middle of the night?

I wont chase or look for someone. My shepherd will let me know where they are at. House clearing is not fun and can be deadly by yourself, even if your own house.

The way our place is set up, all bedrooms are on 1 hallway and only one point of entry. I wepuld set up and protect that doorway while on the phone with 911. During that i would be having my wife grab our daughter and have them go in our room.

That way everyone is in 1 area and too make sure its not the kid sneaking out or in.

Then if it is an intruder, either wait for the fireworks or the sheriff’s

Sounds like a good plan.

I guess it can be lifelong learning, continuously improving our knowledge and skills. From the main USCCA website, when I typed in ‘Home Defense’, I got this page:

If someone is in my home it is already too late. Sheriff is 45 minutes away. My dog will let me know if someone is coming up the driveway. If I am not expecting anyone I am greeting them at the door with my EDC.

First and Foremost Be Prepared. What does that mean? Have a tool, know how to use it, know where the friendlies are, Have a plan and execute that plan. Get on the phone as soon as possible

Here’s a shocker (at least to many people). If and when you “hear than bump in the night” that is telling you it’s about to hit the fan, you are not a SWAT team. It is not your job to subdue the intruders. Your primary “mission in life” at that time is to ensure you and your family survive the event. That almost certainly means withdrawing everyone to a secure location (safe/safest room), barricading the door, and calling law enforcement. Shooting in self defense should only enter into the equation if your safe space is being breached. To survive you should have appropriate weapons staged in your safe room + drinking water + a fully charged mobile phone with all relevant numbers programmed into your contacts. You must be prepared to remain secure in place until the police arrive. You should keep dispatch on line so you can be updated on the situation ongoing outside your safe place. This all assumes your safe space does not have an outside exit. That changes things significantly and is very “case specific.” CAUTION: If someone is pounding on the door - DO NOT SHOOT unless you are POSITIVE it is NOT law enforcement (that’s the 2nd reason you need a phone). All of this needs to be detailed in your home defense plan, and regular practice/drills is essential. Update your plan whenever circumstances change.

Sounds like a good plan not shocking at all

Exactly, in my case I’m in the basement, while my children are on the upstairs floor,
any incursion will likely be via the main floor between us
.

So while i am not SWAT, if I am going to protect my children, I will have to confront the threat head on and not stay put in my room.

Welcome to the fold Cal,
You are right where you’re suppose to be.
Larry nailed it as well as the rest of the folk’s here
MY PLAN is K.I.S.S.
Loaded Sidearm :white_check_mark:
Loaded Long gun :white_check_mark:
Ample supply of Body Bags :white_check_mark: (kidding_) :innocent:
If you HAVE to shoot DON’T DUCK UP THE CRIME SCENE, Trek through blood,
Move any bad guys weapons, stay put. Notify dispatch you HAD TO SHOOT IN
FEAR OF YOUR LIVES! Tell them EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE.
Cell phone :white_check_mark:
Lawyer on speed dial :white_check_mark:
Call 911 FIRST, Then Lawyer,
(Make contact w/ (3) lawyers from USCCA, introduce yourself
– I wrote them all e-mails, If they didn’t respond I added another
LIKE what you hear back, If they seem disinterested keep going down the list.
PICK THE BEST ONE IN YOUR HEART)
Crime Scene Clean-up crew # (also on speed dial) :white_check_mark:
TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN! :white_check_mark:
Familiarize yourself with your weapons, Make it yours in your mind :white_check_mark:
Tell your entire family of the plan, hash it out so everyone has a SAFE SPACE, you may not be able to be all together and you don’t want anybody wandering around in the dark, or in a panic.
As Larry said stay in contact w/ DISPATCH :white_check_mark:
DON’T SHOOT THROUGH A CLOSED DOOR! (unless lead is flying @ YOU!) :white_check_mark:
There are NO DO-OVERS for a Bullet if you can’t be sure, don’t shoot.
Make sure you know what is DOWN RANGE from your safe room door.
That means if your kid, Mother-in-law, is directly across the hall act accordingly
You don’t want to hit a FRIENDLY or your neighbors house.
Buy appropriate AMMO for your situation. Unloading on an Invader with a .308 if you have thin outer walls would be a mistake.
Eyes OPEN, Ears UP! (That means SITUATIONAL AWARENESS FULLY ENGAGED !
If you don’t yet know what that means FIND OUT. VERY IMPORTANT.
It will help you and yours stay safe not just a Home Invasion.
YOU ARE THE PROTECTOR IN YOUR FAMILY, TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.
Don’t just put a Gun in a drawer and think you’re protecting your family.
This is serious business owning a Firearm.
If you need to lock the gun up from Children, a really smart Dog do it.
Only you know your situation.
(My advice? Don’t go HUNTING for an Invader)
Get to a safe place and stick.
Law Enforcement doesn’t KNOW your situation, getting dead by them or an Invader is stupid.
Don’t be a HERO or RAMBO.

Stay Frosty Brother

You can legally defend yourself in California?:grinning_face:

I wouldnt tell dispatch that you had to shoot to defend yourself. Just tell them you had to defend yourself. Much broader for defense in court.

You wouldnt be lying.

Edit: tell them you are armed, so LEO will know that an armed homeowner is in there but do not say that you shot someone to dispatch. That will be used in court ( the recording of 911 call) and a prosecutor can use it as an admission of guilt.

You are armed and had to defend yourself. Just keep saying that.

Tell 'em your ‘PIN’ #! ‘Dee Gold is unda da sinko!’
'My daughters room is down the hall second door on the LEFT, Comprende? Mucho Gusto!
'There’s $5,000 in the freezer in a container marked ‘Kirkland Ice Cream’ !
Never
oh, nevamind!

Any situation you are faced with will be spontaneous and unpredictable. You do need to be aware of the fact that if you shoot to defend yourself and others, a bullet can travel a long ways, even through walls, windows, and some doors. Think it through: what directions you must NOT shoot because innocent neighbors are in that direction. Caliber and muzzle velocity, aim and accuracy when you are roused out of sound sleep, lighting that can tell you whether a person in question is a burglar or family member, or a disoriented neghbor just trying to get home but entering the wrong house (yours) by mistake. Local laws (city limits as well as county and state) are important to know.

I want to know who flagged him and what did he post that got him flagged. If no one responds then we know someone did it out of spite. Maybe the @moderators can tell us or @Stephen431 ( welcome to the forum) can click on the pencil and repost it.
