Not enough room in there for that.Plus an accidental discharge would be tragic…lmao.
Very nice wheel gun, makes me think of an alternative Dirty Harry scene,"Are you asking yourself is that a 986 or a 686? Well, you feel lucky punk?
And I just watched a Clint Eastwood film - okay, it was popcorn movie night, sort of a date night (married 49+ years) - “The Bridges of Madison County.” Maybe I’ll watch “Dirty Harry” today in honor of your post. The 986? Quite enjoyable to shoot, stainless steel moon clips from Eli Johnson, Revolversmith at TKCustom, great source for all things revolver (watch their video converting the cylinder to accept moon clips for rapid loading), adjustable rear sights, smooth DA/SA trigger.
Married for half a century? I’m impressed! And congratulations. You must be quite the man of character to stay married that long. Not many people do that these days. You have my respect sir.
here in Nevada I’ve recently seen some people open carrying revolvers…
Thank you Ben. I’m not sure I’m a man of character" but I have been called a character! Be safe out there.
That was a good one brother @Carl427

I carry a Poly Protect by Taurus .357/.38 as a backup and I found out early that it’s definitely better with 38+p instead of the .357 mag’s that you know I had to try in it LOL, I was 50 yards from the house when I shot it and my wife said it rattled the windows
Don’t know if you put down the money on the DIAMONDBACK SDR, but just ran across this tid-bit of info you might be interested in:
“The SDR’s grip frame is sized for the ever-popular and easy-to-find Smith & Wesson J-frame stocks.”
Yes Brother, I bought it a little while ago. It brought back fond memories when I had my 1st S/W 686.
Then the obsession took off (again!) for Revolvers and I got my Sister a Rock Island .38, then the ’ Judge’
.45-Colt/.410 THEN my ‘Annie!’ The Colt Anaconda! 4"/.44.
The ‘SDR’ is soooooo pretty (and innovative I ‘almost’ don’t want to shoot her…almost.
I recommend ALL these Revolvers.

I mentioned the grips because you “might” want to swap them out someday ![]()
I just put VZ Grips on my one and only 686 revolver yesterday. I am so much happier with how they grip my hand and the 3/16" reduction in LOP makes all the difference with DA pull for someone with short fingers like me ![]()
NICE! I’ll look into this. Thank you.
These are the ones I bought

But they come in a lot of colors and color combinations and textures. I personally like the most aggressive textures.
I’ll put this here because it’s actually about the thread topic. I just really enjoyed this article, Mr. Keith’s writing, and his stories of the adventures he survived.
I have to admit — I’m one of those odd balls who rotates using different CCW, depending on where I’m going; Semi Vs Revolver carry. When I revolver carry, I do get that sense that I’m on the ready, as no need to rack, no safety button/lever, and less worry with that heavy trigger pull. Mine are shrouded hammers, thus the smooth and fast draw.
I don’t have all steel semi’s, My semi’s are plastic on the bottom part (sorry I not up on the correct terminology), and steel slides. But my revolvers are all steel, so having that stronger frame and heavier weight does feel good in the hand.
Nothing against semi’s as they are also part of my rotation.
Same.
Also, don’t apologize.
Like every other subsection of Americans, motorcyclists, off roaders, farmers, truckers, law enforcement and everything else, there is ALWAYS that element that will say you aren’t doing it right, or not using the right item or method.
It’s only right if you do it their way.
We’re American “brothers in arms”, do what you believe is right.
I think that’s a nice revolver. I appreciate any quality defensive handgun, but I personally favor the revolver. I policed for 44 years and over half of those years I was armed with a 357 revolver and I considered myself well armed. Today I have a variety of defensive handguns among which is a S&W mod 66 2, 1/2 inch which I converted to DAO. It is concealable under a tee shirt. It’s not practical in all situations because of the weight but it’s workable. My EDC is most often a satin finish 442.
Good day to you & welcome to the community, Ralph!
Welcome to the community Ralph. You will have a lot to contribute to the group, based on your experience.
Hey revolvers guys and gals.
Saw a vid on “jump crimp”, by the Buffalo Bore rep Tim, where the bullet moved forward out of the casing, which I heard can cause problems when shooting, one being it can prevent the cylinder from turning by getting stuck, locking up the gun.
I read that if you subject a cartridge to too many series of having it in the cylinder while firing the rest of the ammo, but leaving one or some un-fired, the un-fired cartridge gets damaged from the shock. Especially from more powerful rounds.
Makes me suggest, don’t do that such as when practicing, please expend all the rounds from said fired cylinder, but if ever unspent, inspect the cartridge by comparing it to other cartridges.
I’m guessing, rarely would one ever not fire them all off, but instead fire off the whole cylinder load.
This something to be cognizant of at all?
Online reference:
“Jump crimp,” also known as “bullet creep” or “crimp jump,” refers to the phenomenon where the bullet in a cartridge moves forward out of the casing due to recoil, potentially causing reliability issues in firearms, particularly revolvers. This can happen when the crimp (the slight indentation on the case that holds the bullet) isn’t strong enough to resist the force of recoil, especially with heavy bullets or when the firearm is subjected to significant recoil. ”
