Sounds like a Grendel possibly? What barrel manufacturer did you go with?

Living and hunting near the USA / Mexico Border in a smuggling area…of course I carry a sidearm. Duh!

I typically carry either a 1911 chambered in 10mm with a 6 inch barrel and some full load 180 grain hollow points or 200 grain hard cast or i carry my 357 mag when im out in the woods. If im in grizzley country its a 44 mag.

@Barry54 I have a bud that runs a Grendel, I’m just kinda stuck on all things .30 cal and I like to cross platform my ammo so I went with 7.62 x 39. Not the best but roughly equivalent to a 30-30 which has killed more game than most anything because it’s been around so long. I’m partial to White Oak for the few AR’s I’m serious about. In this instance I went with whatever it came with and I’m pretty happy stacking .311’s inside a 1.5" circle at 100. Didn’t have time or powder options to develop a load so the above is with Hornady Black 123’s. I was able to score 100 rnds all the same lot before the prices went snake sh!t, quite possibly the first factory ammo I have bought this century :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers,

I always carry a knife as well as my handgun - you never know when do you need it. A friend of mune presented me Buck 659 Pursuit folding knife few years ago and till then I always take it with me for hunting

I always carry when I’m out in the woods, minimum is a 5” S&W model 60 .357. Usually though it’s either a Model 69 Combat Magnum or a 4 5/8” Super Blackhawk. I started after a time back in the early 70’s when a buddy and I were scouting prior to deer season. We were a few miles from ANY road and had a nasty encounter with a pack of large, feral, dogs. We retreated up a tree to keep from getting bit ( can you say “rabies shots”?). We went back the following day with a M1 carbine and a 94 Marlin and permanently resolved the problem, but there’s a powerful weapon on my hip Every single time I’m in the woods ever since.

I do something similar. It just depends on what size the predators I might run into as what size pistol I might be carrying but one thing I do is carry an extra magazine that will have 2-3 rounds of snake shot. Just in case. Been bit 2x. Not fun and yes I dress appropriately for the areas snakes.

I see the value in doing so. A hunting rifle is not the same as a side arm EDC. I looked up the laws in the state, but regret it was a bit confusing, and contradictory. For one particular state, it read if the forest is even partly state managed, that it prohibited EDC side arm; Another law was more specific prohibiting it in one particular county.

Of note, when hunting, should our EDC side arm be legal to use in the hunt in terms of caliber and barrel length.

I give consideration to the size and weight - given when I go, I do a lot of walking in rough terrain.

I want us to have more rights in the field, but add to the group “Check your local listings” friends.

I don’t think EDC should be used while hunting, unless your EDC has the oomph to put down the animal you are hunting cleanly.

Speaking of which, I just saw this today:

Agreed. That’s why I carry my 6 inch GP100, with 180 grain hard cast ammo.

In my coveralls, I can conceal a gun that is a foot long.

A decent .357 or .44 serves well.

@Dwayne

:100:% agreement. I think it’s important that, when hunting that your firearm has enough juice to takedown the prey you are hunting in a humane way.

@Dwayne I carried a .357 mag in an Alaska Guide chest holster. Simply didn’t have a .44 or I’d carried that.
The .357 was a little light for grizzly but better than nothing - it, wolves and cougar were the apex predators- excluding humans - where I hunted at the time.
Still carry a .357 now but a shorter barrel, since I’ve moved the apex list has changed to black bear.
