Given the unfortunate circumstance where you have to defensively use a firearm in your house, what should be done with your dog and what will happen to them? I imagine you will be detained by police until the scene is secured, but as someone who lives with just their dog I am concerned for their well being.
I’ve got two and have the same concern. I am lucky that I have family in the area who can come and take care of my dogs. Any family, friends, coworkers who would be able to step in and watch the dog? Any doggy daycares or boarding facilities that you use if you have to go out of town?
Make a tentative plan for someone to watch the dog for the interim. If there isn’t someone, I’m not sure what happens to the dog. Maybe it goes to the humane society until you can reclaim him/her?
I believe in a situation like that if you are polite and talk to the LEOs on the scene they may be able to call the shelter and house him temporarily. But if you get found guilty and will end up in jail it’s ashamed because those dogs usually get euthanized.
The reason I like dogs is because they’ll stir up anxiety for an intruder. I only remove my animals for visitors. Kick my dog as an intruder and I kick you. I’m with John Wick’s solution to someone killing my animals. Just make sure the intruder is holding a weapon.
In all seriousness, human life is far more valuable than animals no matter how much you love them. I hate when people treat their pets as if they’re humans. The term “fur babies” crawls up my skin. I stopped going to a vet that always called them that.
True. I do give @Bretton props for thinking through the situation and formulating a plan in case the worst happens.
Taking care of your animals is something a lot of people haven’t considered in a self-defense situation (at home or away form home).
I just spent over $650 to save a doomed 5-6 week old kitten. Originally we thought it would be over $1,200. But the refunded some of the money. Thank God. But that ought to show you how much I feel about or pets, especially with my wife and teen daughter crying bitterly after being told it wouldn’t survive. I had to tell them to try and save it. What kind of inhuman can I be.
Kirby is really cute.
Thanks all for the suggestions and sympathy; it sounds like I would have the opportunity to get a hold of family to have her picked up and taken care of. Just wasn’t sure if I would have that opportunity or logistics of having a live animal on the scene.
If you’re a USCCA member, you can always have something like that added to your account just in case. We can make a note of who to call. If you only get one call, you don’t want to use it to call someone to watch your pet.
@Killjoy - I knew you were a softy! Kirby is adorable!
Really? How would I go about that?

Great question. I found a dog once. He had a tag on his collar with a phone number; I called and the chap was reunited with his guardian. If you do that, list a few numbers in case you’re unable to accept the call.
