I’m going to buy and try some. Have yet to push 147 grain ammo through my carry firearm. Would like to see and feel the difference in recoil.
I had a friend load 115, 124, and 147 FMJ randomly in a couple mags for my M&P Shield 2.0. I couldn’t feel the difference when shooting. Prior to that I thought the 147s felt slightly more recoil.
Bullet weight, expansion, and velocity are all independent variables that affect overall performance. Therefore, bullet weight without considering expansion and velocity is moot. That’s without throwing barrel length into the equation
My EDC is a M&P Shield. Having a short barrel, and from what I’ve read and seen on YouTube, 147gr. is the best weight for this particular gun. Allows greater gas pressure buildup before exiting the muzzle, compensating for the shorter barrel.
@Andrew28 that’s part of why my hubby recommended it for my grand daughter’s glock G43, and she says she can tell the difference in how it shoots. I dont feel the difference though.
Welcome to the group!
In general I will opt for the heaviest payload that I can get my hands on ESPECIALLY in pistols. The Time of Flight is essentially identical at “normal” ranges but the kinetics are substantially different enough to warrant the increased recoil. Yes, bigger bullets driven at full speed do kick more, at both ends.

I shot a magazine of different loads thru my Glock 19 and videoed the recoil. I didn’t feel a difference and the video didn’t show and noticable difference. however I wasn’t shooting for accuracy. i still have different loads. Next trip I’m going to check POA vs POI and see if anything changes. It’s a pretty short barrel so I’m not expecting a big difference
No difference for self defense. I used 14 different rounds in magazine (mixed manufacturers and grains). No difference what so ever. Not all were perfect shots, but still in center mass (21 feet).
The Federal HST 147gr. bullets I use in the Shield are specifically designed for 3 inch barrels. Proper expansion is guaranteed and field tests prove this. Other ammo manufacturers are also jumping on the 147gr. bandwagon, catering to the fast-growing market in subcompact, easier to conceal firearms.
Thank you Zee!
