Exactly my thoughts. Add to that, since we have hindsight in this case with someone lying on the ground continually being beaten with a baseball bat, it would have been better to yell out the window at the onset instead of now getting involved when you have to bring a firearm to the equation.
Same reason I would take my drunk friends keys prior to them driving and a whole host of other situations that an ounce of prevention is better than looking for a cure.
Of course! If the family is in danger you need to do what you need to do. As for a huge disparity of force, well, how do you know who are the good guys? Or maybe there are no “good guys”. Many different scenarios can come to play in such a situation.
Look you can watch someone die or stop it ! Is what I’m taking away from this if I lived In new York or New Jersey I’m calling the cops and probably catching the video but where I live I will be a good citizen and assess the scene apply scene safety order the man drop the bat the assault occurred if you have the ability to effect a citizen’s arrest you do so. After the assault has stopped possibly render first aid if you shot the bat wielding individual my hope is you would be rendering first aid looks real bad if you don’t , the injured party can always refuse aid, imho I would try to do what I feel is right based on my training as a soldier , emt, and security officer.
Yea hearing and watching cops a lot of DV is a high percentage of fights. Mainly in these quarantine days. I’d have to agree on not leaving the house but keep a watchful eye on the situation
The “see something say nothing ,unless it involves me” mentality is not what it’s about if I find out you could’ve done something to stop someone from dying or getting severely injured and did nothing then retreat to your shell and stay inside , don’t call the cops or anyone go back to being a sheep I mean asleep! Because when this mentality infects the populace the sickness is some one could’ve done something but did nothing I personally feel let down by this kind of apathy.
I do know about that this wasn’t about you, so I will be the one to apologize if I stepped on your thing, sir this is about my frustration with the culture I grew up in and for you to say the thing about the tear drop tat I could care less, some of us did far worse for God and country and a teardrop is the last thing we are worried about. Spider webs on elbows and diamond tat is the world I came from I’m a civilian now and again I will lead with respect and say I apologize and if it was you or a stranger ( we are part of this community) I’m not going to let you get killed in front of me. A wise person said " everybody is a tough guy till a tough guy comes into the room " well I rolled with those guys, I’m not the baddest guy on the planet, with respect I’m just one of them.
Call 911, get my family to cover and watch in case the fight comes back into my yard or either of the participants tries to force their way into my home.
I don’t know either of them and I don’t know what started the fight. If one of the participants is a neighbor, that changes things as I know them and hope that if I needed help, they’d do the same. In which case I’d call the police and step in. Have my weapon drawn, keeping distance and position myself to where I can get a clear shot.
For everyone who said they’d step in, how do you know who is the innocent party and who is the aggressor? If you’ve witnessed the entire situation, you could be legally OK.
However, without knowing what happened, if you stepped in and shot someone to stop the fight, you could very well get in legal hot water and end up in jail.
For a legal claim of self-defense to be used for defending yourself or another person, you or that other person have to be an innocent party.
Every situation is going to be different and everyone’s backgrounds will effect what decision they make. Just because someone does not interject themselves into a situation does not mean they are any less of a protector, nor does it make them a “sheep.”
Also, please remember, name calling is not allowed in the Community.
The one thing that would change things after dialing 911 and keeping an eye on them from inside is if a family member pulled into driveway. Then I’d probably go out to escort them into house.
I apologize for the comment but the context was go back to being asleep. One doesn’t have to fire his weapon to do something, we are not the police in this situation we do not have the luxury of “police power” to animate our actions only the rights of a "reasonable person " these are ideas and opinions and different perspectives if I’m wrong here I feel it’s better to be wrong in the forum and make the introspective corrections and not personalize any indifference to my responses, information is what seek ,not animosity sorry Dawn! Won’t happen again!
I agree with your questions. In this situation, me and my family are not in danger. If that changes during my monitoring the situation, then I would act appropriately.
One thing that was stressed in my licensing class was being wise about who I’m protecting with my fire arm. We were shown various clips and scenarios that would seem like someone needed to step in, but later found out it would have caused more trouble. For example, a video showed a van pull up in a parking lot quick. Multiple people grabbed and pulled a teen into the van against their will and sped off. It would seem someone needed to intervene and save the teen, however, Later it was concluded that the teen had run away from home and the parents were bringing them back home.
It was highly encouraged by my instructor to not be a hero, but practically carry for personal protection and protection of loved ones. Fortunately, this also correlates to protecting others. For example, a shooter at church is endangering my family. I may act to protect my family and shoot the assailant. This would result in saving more lives, but my primary concern is me and my family. The other effect, when we conceal carry, bad people don’t know who is carrying and who is not. We get to be directly involved in deterring crime even if we never need to draw our weapon.
