I think there are more options that that, and the options mentioned in the referenced article take into account narratives which I suspect might not be all that likely.

Option D: The liberals and conservatives are divided down the line and in fighting begins. Each retreating to their respective states with refugees fleeing back “home”. Civil war breaks out but this time the “north” doesn’t have the industrial advantages since much of it has fled to the south All the illegals become roving bands murdering and looting at their pleasure. American breaks up into 3-5 separate nations. The west coast gets invaded by china because they are easy pickings and hugging trees.
The sticking point is where do the individual forts land? Do they align with the host state or remain loyal to the broken gubment in DC? It becomes a knockout drag out war of attrition with the only ones remaining are the self sufficient that band together to protect their own interests.
PS left out all the spec-ops that have sneaked in destroying valuable infrastructure, dams, electric plants, bridges. Isolating cities and preventing national mobilization. Better know how to live like the ppl of the Great Depression or earlier.

Lew is right that America always trades liberty for the illusion of security. Just look at the millions who line up at airports every single day for their 4th Amendment violating warrantless search by government agents as a condition of boarding an aircraft. Keeps us safe from terrorists with bombs in their underpants, right?
I find Lew’s Options A and B to be unlikely to be how the S hits the fan. I think it will be our government’s bipartisan political agreement on unconstrained spending using printed money to fund politically popular social programs and military adventurism. More printed money devalues the currency pushing us ever closer to a 1920’s style German hyperinflation scenario when Germany printed money to pay its reparations debt. That hyperinflation, in large measure, brought Hitler to power.
The spending during the COVID event that used printed money to bailout businesses and individuals fueled the inflation we are now living through. Printed money to send troops, arms and ammo to Israel to fight another endless, ever expanding war(s) in Middle East will do more of the same. And, both liberals and conservatives in DC will agree that it’s the right thing to do, 'cause we stand with Israel, even if it comes at the death of the dollar and the death of the American experiment.

My conscience tells me that stopping people from murdering innocent people is the right thing to do. Stopping the people that are stopping people from killing innocent people is not. I think the world should be doing everything in its power to stop innocent people from being killed.

The National Muslim Democratic Council, which includes Democratic Party leaders from hotly contested states likely to decide the election, such as Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, called on Biden to use his influence with Israel to broker a ceasefire by 5 p.m. ET (2100 GMT) on Tuesday.
In an open letter entitled “2023 Ceasefire Ultimatum,” the Muslim leaders pledged to mobilize Muslim voters to “withhold endorsement, support, or votes for any candidate who endorses the Israeli offensive against the Palestinian people.”
“Your administration’s unconditional support, encompassing funding and armaments, has played a significant role in perpetuating the violence that is causing civilian casualties and has eroded trust in voters who previously put their faith in you,” the council wrote.
