R and I have talked about this exact thing many times over the years of putting 5 boys through public schools.

I agree with him, but it’s a little more complicated than that.

Instruction must be varied.

Instruction must fit the student.

But at some point, you end up with such a system of education that it’s almost one-on-one and it’s prohibitively expensive. The “factory model” of education has been criticized with good reason. However, the solution isn’t easy and is probably had at the margin rather than in a radical reformation of the education system.

I am absolutely opposed to medicating students unless absolutely necessary. I think we medicate way too much.

The video above reminds me of this video if you have 12 minutes.

Home Schooling. I’m all for it.

I’m a product of US interment schooling. If learn ‘differently’ than the majority of the class then they just give you a bad grade, call your parents and tell them their kid needs to ‘apply themselves more’.
Then, there is the political side. My High School, to ensure they would receive state and federal funding would ensure that they had enough students enrolled each year. If the numbers looked short then they would fudge the grades and have students repeat a quarter just to meet the quota.

I’ll take it a step farther. My wife and I have a really good relationship with our two teenage kids. I am not only explaining why we do or don’t do things, I am explaining to them at this age that I’m starting to do more coaching and less demanding. I am also explaining to them that there is a respectful appeal process if they disagree with me or have a concern. And when they come to me with questions, I am responding to them with “what do you think?” And “why do you think that way?” It’s time to amp up the critical thinking skills with my kids in all of this.

Great video!

I don’t usually laugh out loud at this kind of thing, but that was hysterical!

Huge props to @Karacal for keeping this thread going.

I would definitely be on board with that, too, if I wasn’t doing all the work. :sunglasses:
