What would you do if you had no self-defense tools?

I always have a weapon, a heavy wooden cane. Even if you do not need the cane you can carry one. :+1:

@Gilberto You are correct. That is exactly why rolled up wet news papers and magazines are not allowed in jails and prison’s.
Bad dog!

If we can have a little fun with this topic, this is exactly what Sammo Hung is known for. Go watch some of his movies. There are always fight scenes where he has to improvise weapons from whatever is around him. It’s sometimes meant to be funny, but they’re also good examples of using what you have available… plus some Kung Fu.

Carry a roll of Quarters.
Maybe a cane.

I’m an old fart. I’d probably borrow my wife’s cane, and act as if I needed it to get around.

Whatever is handy. I do not believe in a fair fight.

I know this seems trivial, but I have been to court many times and served on a few juries, to include capital homicide case, and never was concerned about making plans for my safety, walking to and from the court house. Either you are prepared to react to situations or not.

I thought about what you said, and I have to agree. Firearms are always a tool of last resort. If I’m aware of my surroundings, then I should know where the exits are, where to find cover and concealment, where weapons of opportunity are, etc. The fact that I can’t have a firearm in a courthouse eliminates my last, worst, and most effective means of self-defense, but it hardly means that I’m defenseless. And owning a firearm shouldn’t mean that it’s my sole means of protection.

For those of us on the sunny side of 70, those other “options” may no longer exist. Hand-to-hand is not very effective due to the natural degradation of strength, agility, reflexes, etc. Sadly, I am one who forgets all this and still think I have a big red S on my chest. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Of those things I still can have in places like a courthouse, I would be wise to select SOMETHING to be an equalizer in case I need one. For you younger folks, these are not even in your view yet. One day, they may well be.

What military genius is it who said, “if you find yourself in a fair fight your strategy sucks.”

I believe the quote is “If you find yourself is a fair fight, your tactics suck” and it is attributed to John Steinbeck.

Fair rights are for suckers. As my dad once told me, “If it’s fair, it isn’t a fight; it’s a sporting event.” Also, "Fair fight is just another way to say ‘taking a beating’. "

I was actually called for jury duty, quite some number of years ago. I’m retired military, grew up in a multi-generational military family, rather conservative and have pretty much a black + white version of what’s right and what’s wrong.

Questionaire came out and I answered all 3 questions - in black + white.

Not only was I excused, even my wife received a letter from the courts that she was exempt from service, forthwith.

All you have to do is have a sense of right & wrong to be excused.

Tae Kwon Do.

Punch to the neck.

Stomp on the foot-arch.

Gougue eyes out. Nut-shot. Face into the sidewalk.

I will fight to the death if my life is threatened, even if all the government allows me is my own feet and fists. But I"m not a teen anymore, when I studied that. I’m old, slow and arthritic now. So… now, because our Dear Leaders seem to protect the criminal and prosecute the righteous, IDGAF and when they outlaw CCW, I will Carry On like nothing happened.

I’m out of F’s to give. FAAFO.

Flash and Bash (and then dash :running_man:‍♂!)

Just saw something at Cabelas called the “Hike and Strike.” Supposedly it’s a trekking pole with a taser.

Probably still frowned upon in the courthouse though

Jiu-Jitsu.

As an “older” guy I think about these things often. Whenever possible I just completely avoid the situation/area. I find it frustrating at the least that I am put in an uncomfortable position to do my civic duty. As others mentioned, my courthouse is not in the most savory neighborhood. It is a very stressful situation. Luckily it does not happen often. I think I might call the Judge and ask for an exemption, just be honest, I am uncomfortable trekking between the car and the courthouse. I dont know how that would go over, but it is one more thing to try.
