I’ve never ‘served’ either Bruh
BUT, A Military ship has a Bridge full of look-outs
and EARLY WARNING DEVICES Radar, Sonar etc.
I’ve been on plenty of Warships though
I’ve heard (3) Miles out plenty of times and the ship goes into
a defensive posture (sort of a Battle Stations)
Warnings are blasted out on MANY devices (JIC)
Flags, Flares, BEFORE they get too close.
Ships don’t stop on the dime. Too close and this happens.
I’ve gone through a ‘Canal’ and the entire Battle Group went single file
there was a lot of room yet they still went singly.
GOOD CALL NAVY. (MOO) Lot’s a luck Chucky Cheese…
True. The captain doesn’t actually con the the ship (navalese for drive). SWO’s give instructions to a sailor at the helm who actually steers the ship. The captain might be on the bridge during certain evolutions or he might be getting some well deserved shut eye; it doesn’t matter. As the ultimate authority onboard, he’s responsible for whatever happens.
Chucky cheese is pretty low on the totem pole. I would hope for something more worthy, like Denny’s or even Olive Garden
THAT! is it in a nutshell Bruh
He/ She is RESPONSIBLE for better or worse for 5,000+ lives
for whether to ‘Launch’ defensive measures or if the navigation ducks up and they take out a Port dock. Other than that he is a figurehead. He/they may be a Warrior (I hope so)
but ultimately a ‘Manager’ of all their departments. Do we have enough fuel?, is the
Power plant running optimally? Enough Food? etc.
He doesn’t KNOW what’s in the ships stores–his department heads feed him the info and he does the ordering.
Due to the carriers’ missions, captains are chosen from the ranks of naval aviators.
It’s funny to speculate about his having to apply for a job at McD’s but there’s a lot involved in achieving that position that allows a Navy ship captain to land on his feet. “Loss of confidence in his/her ability to command” covers anything the Navy wants it to. There’s more to commanding a ship than keep your zipper up and don’t scatch the paint.
It’s the same in the civilian world. Captain Joseph Hazelwood of the Exxon Valdez who was in his cabin when the bridge team screwed up and caused a record breaking oil spill was fired but landed a job teaching at SUNY maritime college
Now Mister Hazelwood…was a duckin’ DRUNK. Please don’t forget that little tidbit.
True dat. My point was that his knowledge base wasn’t wasted after he got fired.
I know dat Brother
Just making sure we tick all da boxes i all.
Like AOC (Always keep all career choices open!)
AOC’s knowledge base be like “You want fries with that?”
More like you want a BJ behind da bar with yer 7n7?..
Sure but it’s too bad he has significant limitations on what those “Defensive Measures” might be, Given all options on the table, he probably could have made it so the only interference the “Freighter” (Yes in quotes, I doubt the “Freighter” got in the way accidentally) put up was a ducking oil slick…
I meant defensive measures in case of attack.
As for whether this was an intentional’ RAM?
I have no idea.
IF any of the NAVY folk’s I observed a ship coming towards them (in a hostile manner)
That would be all for them and they’d be visiting Davy Jones
The NAVY has clear ROE (Rules of Engagement) to PROTECT their Ships and Crews.
You don’t heed their warnings it’s weapons free.
They don’t dik around.
This guy deserved his punishment.
EEEEE-AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
(The Congressional Braying Donkey (no offense to donkeys )
If he had the option to eliminate the threat and he choose instead to wreck into the “Freighter” then yea, he’s not taking care of his crew or equipment. He should be relieved from duty.
I wonder if we’ll learn more about what actually happened.
This incident reminds me I have a nephew at sea in an undisclosed location.
I have no idea if we’ll EVER know the TRUTH!
BUT we stand a better chance now with this Commander-in-Chief.
Not placing any bets still but there seems to be a Shift change
going on now— INTERESTING TIMES AHEAD FOLK’S!
