According to Newsmax, two National Guardsmen were shot.
Their condition is not known.
âThe Metropolitan Police Department in D.C. confirms they are on scene of a shooting at 17th and I Street, NW â thatâs less than a mile away from the White House,â Fox News reported.
The shooting comes barely a week after the âSeditious Sixâ Democrats attacked the military and urged them to defy Trumpâs orders.

Two National Guard members were shot Wednesday afternoon near the White House. Officials provided conflicting reports on their conditions, but in the latest update shortly before 5 p.m., FBI Director Kash Patel said the victims are in critical condition.
The victims were ambushed, D.C.âs mayor and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said. A man turned a corner and fired at the guard members, MPDâs Executive Assistant Chief of Specialized Operations Jeffery Carroll said.
âThis is a targeted shooting,â D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said.
The suspect used a handgun and the shooting is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism, two senior U.S. law enforcement officials told NBC News.
The victims were shot just before 2:30 p.m., right next to Farragut Square Park and two blocks north of the White House.
The scene at 17th and I streets NW has been secured and the suspect is in custody, MPD said on social media just before 3 p.m. Police believe there was only one suspect in the shooting.
The suspect has been initially identified as an Afghan national, the two senior U.S. law enforcement officials said, but no other information about their identity has been released. Law enforcement officials are still trying to confirm all of the individualâs details, they said. â

â The gunman accused of shooting two National Guardmembers blocks from the White House the day before Thanksgiving is 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, three law enforcement sources confirmed to Fox News Digital.
Lakanwal, an illegal migrant who entered the U.S. after the withdrawal from Afghanistan, overstayed his visa granted under Operation Allies Welcome, sources said.
Authorities are investigating the shooting as a possible act of international terrorism.

âA Fox News journalist reported late Wednesday that the Afghan-born man who shot two National Guard troops deployed in Washington, D.C., entered the United States under former President Joe Bidenâs chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
The report, from the networkâs Bill Melugin, ties the alleged ambush attacker to a program many criticized for its lax, sometimes nonexistent, vetting processes.
NBC News reported that the shooting was being investigated by the FBI as a potential terrorist act. The two members of the West Virginia National Guard were still in critical condition as of Wednesday evening.
The suspect, NBC News confirmed, was 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, whose last address was in Bellingham, Washington.
He was also shot in the ambush and is being treated at a hospital, although his condition was unknown.
The shooting happened as the National Guard members were on âhigh visibility patrolsâ near 17th and High streets in the District, according to Executive Assistant Police Chief Jeffery Carroll.
âThe suspect came around the corner, he immediately started firing a firearm at the two National Guard members,â Carroll said.
Melugin, meanwhile, reported that âmultiple federal law enforcement sourcesâ told him the suspect was âan Afghan national who entered the U.S. on 9/8/2021 as part of the Biden adminâs Operation Allies Welcome in the aftermath of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.â
âIâm told his permission to be in the U.S. expired in September of this year, and he is now in the country illegally,â he said in a post on X just before 7:30 p.m. Eastern.
Even as the Afghan withdrawal was happening in August and September of 2021, there were concerns about the refugee evacuation process put in place by the Biden administration.

In February of 2022, the Pentagonâs inspector general noted that they had identified at least 50 âpotentially significant security concernsâ among those who were evacuated to the United States, including those with suspected terror ties.
âSignificant security concerns include individuals whose latent fingerprints have been found on improvised explosive devices and known or suspected terrorists,â the report read, also noting that 28 of them couldnât be located.
