Good point, kids can be a lot more resourceful than we give them credit for. Since child safety is my main concern I am leaning toward the keyed lock and then getting a safe when my budget allows.

Thanks that is useful feedback. The possibility of still being able to move the trigger a bit with some combination locks is actually one of the things I was concerned about.
Since my main goal is child safety, I am leaning toward the keyed lock if it provides a tighter and more secure fit. Have you had any issues with the combination mechanism itself over the years, or has it held up pretty well?
Kids in the house, that is really the main reason I am looking at locks. I will check out cable locks too but right now I am comparing them with trigger locks to see which is the better option.

It will really depend on your kids then. Some locks can be defeated (or destroyed) more easily than others. If a person was just concerned about a curious toddler getting their hands on a ‘toy’ and having an accident, then just about any lock would do. But if someone was concerned about a teenager getting a stupid idea on social media and using the firearms for illegal purposes, then no ‘standard’ lock is safe. Even many so-called gun safes are completely worthless, as The Lock Picking Lawyer has shows many times.

Lots of options, depending upon needs and use I guess. If it’s long term storage, I imagine you can use multi layers of locks or deterrence. If it’s toddler, the idea of zip ties on a firearm I guess can be another layer to deter, but slower for you to access, having to cut it and a “bummer” having to use too many plastics.

Don’t have loaded firearms accessible to them. Some handguns can fire even without a mag, some have mag safeties that prevent that. The best way to prevent a firearm from firing is to not have ammunition in it.

Child safety around firearms is two fold. Obviously you are doing one thing right in searching for a way to secure your firearm around your child/ren…. The second part is education.
A kid who’s told simply “don’t play with that” will be even more curious about it,
Educate yourself about the gun, the four rules, and reinforce that education with the children.
Personally I had my children knowing the rules of guns before they were 8 and 10,… their first time firing a real gun was 11 and 13.
They both did amazing!
Started with a .22LR, then 9mm, then .45, and finally a .44 magnum in handguns, .22LR, 5.56, and 30/30 rifles. Was a big day!

And by the time they were in highschool I could leave a loaded gun on the table and know nothing would happen with it.

Anyway, my 2 cents worth.
In times of an emergency when you need your weapon ASAP, will you be able to remember a combination while under stress at 3AM?
Conversely, key locks are great, but since your goal is keeping kids safe you’d need total key control. No leaving your keys on your nightstand while you mow.
No answer is right for every situation.

A pair of handcuffs would be more substantial than a cable lock—through the trigger guard and an open slide, or with a revolver through he trigger guard and the top strap. The other bracelet can be secured to a fixed object if available.
Of course, if one knows how to unlock a pair of cuffs security is minimal.
IMHO, more bang for the OP’s buck would be a lock box like the FastSafe (best) Liberty (useful) or even a plastic MTM (it’s plastic-–'nuf said) with a small padlock he can use for transporting his Roscoe to the range as well.
