The olfactory factor

Do you have a fondness for how firearms smell?
Nitro solvent is a favorite aroma for many shooters I know, and what Hoppes has become since the formula changed is lamentable.
For me, the most cloying fragrance is Government Issue C-L-A, but that probably stems from time spent preparing arms rooms for inspections while in the army.
Back in the 70’s, Colt recommended a wipe down of Pledge for a protection. It smelled great!
Ammunition too can have a soothing aroma although some of the stuff stinks, but this seems to be a recent development since the ammo shortages started a few decades ago.
Paper shotgun shells smell especially nice, but modern plastics not so much.
What firearm/ammo/solvent smells mean something to you?

WD40 goes way back into my childhood and that was a long time ago. I don’t use it for firearms now but in the past it was a staple at the gun club.

When I bought my AR-15 and started looking for ammo (it was during the pandemic shortage), I picked up some Australian 5.56. It’s all sealed in blister packs, and the stuff literally stinks like no ammo I’ve otherwise encountered.

Not as much, but I once splashed on some after shave on my face, then holstered up before going out, ended up scenting my grip by accident, no wonder it smelled fresh for like a week.

Interesting on the “Pledge” spray onto a towel wipe. They make an anti allergy version, I ought to look into that.

For the car, a stocking stuffer Christmas gift:

No. 9 Air Freshener: SKU: H9AF3

I wonder how many thugs see it and say, “hard pass, driver is packing!”

Smells like honey baked banana (no cinnamon added)
:grinning:
It’s a great addition to Aguila ammo, which, once shot, smells like women perfumes (still don’t know which one).

One of my favorites! I used to pick up the empties and smell them when the action slowed down dove hunting as a kid  Of course it was impossible to beat smelling one fresh out of the chamber while the smoke was still curling out.

And you are right, I don’t know what happened when they changed to plastic …

I hate the way oil smells. All oils, even Hoppe’s.

I like the way my pistol’s gunpowder smells when it fires off. I love the way my friend’s brother’s SKS smells when it fires off a round, but my AR smells like chemical death when I take it shooting.

I’ve always loved the smell of shooting and of Hoppes. I know there are all kinds of newer cleaners out there, but I guess I’m pretty old school, and that’s still what I use. It’s served me well for about 45 years or more since my first gun.

I did the same as @Gary_H when I was a kid, sniff the empty shells (I also sniffed the blue mimeograph ink in school, of course).

I bought some 9mm Barnaul ammo during the plandemic. it’s dirty and underpowered but when fired it smells just like the caps we had as kids. Mmmm…

Dad used Hoppe’s #9 cleaning his bird gun when I was a little guy-70+ years ago. Still love the way it smells, always brings back great memories of hunting with Dad.

Sometimes, when I don’t have a time for detailed cleaning, I’m using Ballistol.

Recently, after using this product I shot a lot and my firearm became pretty hot. The smell of Ballistol was wonderful…
