DeWitt walks you through a real-life self-defense incident and shares his key takeaways._ A Wesley Chapel, Florida, man who had posted photos of his firearms online was playing video games after midnight when he heard glass shatter. He retrieved a Glock firearm and investigated. The man met an armed, masked intruder in the hallway and shot the trespasser. He shot the armed accomplice right behind too. A third armed intruder got off a shot but was hit by the defender’s third shot and fell. The defender suffered a failure to feed and turned back to get another gun. The third invader tried to run away but was stopped and held at gunpoint by a neighbor. Police said the attack was linked to social media postings of firearms. The first two attackers died at the scene. The third was charged with robbery and two counts of murder. He denied involvement. **Do you share the contents of your safe online? I shy away from big social media platforms, these days. The only place I see people posting pictures of their firearms (and sometimes their faces) is here, on this public forum. ---

I used to when I was a first-time gun owner, excited to share to the world my first firearm. Thankfully, I became more cautious and deleted them all. ---

I did not use social media during my career for obvious reasons, and do not now after retirement for family security reasons. This platform is the extent of my “social media” participation. And even here, you will never see what I own, or any pictures at all. Just basic common sense in my book. ---

Ditto here. This is my sole participation in social media. I used to have a Facebook account. I dropped it due to security concerns while deployed. We were told that the enemy was actively searching social media for military personnel. There were some stories floating in the rumor mill that family members were getting terrorizing phone calls and posts designed to cause fear and panic at home. ---

The last time I had a social media account was MYSPACE and I believe that doesn’t exist anymore. The USCCA community is all I have and I am good with that. ---

Although the instances I know of involved lawyers, not terrorists. [Insert lawyer joke here] As one person told me: you can control what you say about yourself on Facebook. You can’t control what others say about you. No matter how careful you think you are, it only takes one careless friend or relative to post the wrong comment, and now “they” know everything they need to know about you. ---

I’m pretty open about my feelings about guns. I’ll talk guns when the opportunity presents itself. I just think the hide in the back room attitude some have makes the gun culture look scary and sneaky. I don’t have any “Social Media” accounts, in fact, this is the only board I post on. I’m sure it occasionally happens where some hears about somebodies guns then goes to take them but honestly, I’m just not very concerned about it. ---

This is as “social” media as I get! Only family and you guys are aware of my “arsenal” ( that’s a gun and a box of rounds ). Neighbors, outside associates know nothing. My boss at the time, thank goodness, carried and allowed me to carry as well. As far as protection, we maintain the lowest profile as possible and our small house is a fortress! Nothing in our home says pro 2A, that’s just in case I need work inside the home, no magazines or magazines, T-shirts, no expended rounds. It’s on my hip when they arrive and we follow CDC guidelines, 6’ separation! However, my fascination with blades and fantasy edged weapons is on full display, from samurai swords, all custom framed by me, and a couple of Kit Rae items all framed. I have not posted pictures of any of my gear anywhere. I sent my best friend a few pics via text and that has been about it. I don’t like to advertise. When we go to the range or come home from the gun store I always load or unload the car in the garage with the garage door closed. ---

To the community: My wife of 30 years was undergoing cancer treatment. Every trip to the hospital involved questions of - Do you have guns in your house? how many? What types? Do you have any knives in your house not related to cooking? If you failed to answer, the police were called in! Since when did this become a standard for healthcare treatment? It’s none if their business and has nothing to do with cancer treatment! I avoid all social media! If you believe in 2A, you’re a target for the left! Don’t advertise your defenses! Let them find out the hard way! ---

I find the simplest answer with a straight face and looking them in the eye, is a simple quizzical NO, but I tested positive for Covid, while coughing and drooling, that’s why I’m here! If he really wanted to know if I owned guns and knives, he’d make a house call! You could always shoot back and ask the doctor, does he still beat his wife! Sometimes I find that offering a mint shuts down a conversation real quick! Or, do you own any ladies clothing that are not your wife’s. All of which have nothing to do with healthcare! ---
