According to a new Scripps News/Ipsos survey, 54% of respondents said they “strongly” or “somewhat” support the policy former President Donald Trump has made central in his reelection effort. This total includes a sharp partisan divide; mass deportation is supported by 86% of Republicans, 58% of independents, and 25% of Democrats.
In more good news for Trump, 39% of respondents said that immigration is a top issue this campaign, coming behind inflation, at 57%. Respondents believe Trump will do a better job at handling immigration than Vice President Kamala Harris, 44%-34%.
Another area of consensus is concern over illegal immigrants voting in elections. Nearly half of respondents said they were concerned over the prospect, including 83% of Republicans, 46% of independents, and 24% of Democrats.
Skepticism over asylum-seekers has also risen, with a majority of Democrats, 55%, supporting restrictions limiting the number of migrants who can claim asylum, along with 88% of Republicans.
