SpaceX Polaris Dawn mission

Elon’s Falcon 9 boosted four non-professional astronauts into orbit yesterday morning. My friend happened to be getting ready for a daily, early morning walk, and captured this historic picture about 11 minutes after launch. Scared the $h!t out of her because she didn’t know what it was. Thought it was cool enough to post.

The sun is beyond the horizon from her vantage point, but the rocket was high enough into orbit that the sun shown through it’s contrails nicely.

Cackles, if elected, may as well have most of us in shackles.

But the SpaceX thing is awesome. Can’t wait to watch the spacewalk tomorrow.

It’s a combination of earths spin, and the trajectory to achieve low earth orbit… (17,500 mph) yeah, the launch starts vertically to clear the majority of earth’s atmosphere, but then needs to accelerate to stay in orbit!

It’s almost like the parabolic arc of a bullet trajectory,… except that once it hits its apex it is going so fast that it keeps missing the planet as it’s trying to fall back down!

Seriously, if it wasn’t for the angular momentum the mission would just plummet straight back down!

Super cool pic!

For as often as SpaceX does these dusk launches to create those light shows I’m somewhat surprised that anyoneDOESNT know what they are by now!
