September is preparedness month 2024

I have a well on my property and don’t depend on municipal water. My wife and I have agreed that if we ever move, the first thing we are doing to the new place is having a well drilled and a big propane tank installed. I would never want to be solely dependent on municipal water, ever. If there isn’t water available underground, I wouldn’t move there. A big part of being prepared is settling in a place that gives you some resources, and provides a degree of safety from disasters.

Often, if you find an older house, there is a well on the property that was unhooked when municipal water came through. My first house was like that. I uncapped the well, had the water tested, and it was GTG. Instant, free unlimited water.

This topic will always be open to any questions or comments.

Our power went out and took a cpl days to get it back. My next big purchase is going to be a whole house dual fuel portable generator. Buy a cpl big tanks for propane and have the electric company come out and install a connector for it.

I have 3 freezers full of meat and don’t want to take a chance of losing it this winter. The last 2 winters have been pretty mild and I’m thinking this one will be one for the books. It seems as if fall has already started here. Waiting to get back home to order it and more canned meats.

My brother works Wal Mart part time. Word on the street is paper goods (toilet paper, etc) and cleaning supplies will be what they find hard to stock.

I remember those formula and diaper days with my own kids. Wow on those prices. You’re a good grandpa! Congrats to you and the family!!

US Dockworkers’ Strike Could Make It Difficult To Get These Grocery Items (msn.com)

The best advice for shoppers is don’t make panic purchases. Stock up on things you use regularly, but try not to hoard (many specific food goods are needed by people with dietary or economic restrictions, and hoarding directly impacts people’s lives). Check multiple retailers as well as online, as some may be procuring their goods through alternate ports or venues. Consider alternative products, or plan on going without an item for a few days or weeks. And remember that the strike will eventually end and shelves will be restocked (if they’re even emptied at all).

Food for thought

Quinoa
Quinoa is a whole grain packed with nutrients, fiber, protein, and plant compounds. It has many health benefits and is an easy way to add variety to your diet.
Just one cup (185 grams) of cooked quinoa is a great source of the following nutrients

  • Manganese: 58% of the RDI.
  • Magnesium: 30% of the RDI.
  • Phosphorous: 28% of the RDI.
  • Folate: 19% of the RDI.
  • Copper: 18% of the RDI.
  • Iron: 15% of the RDI.
  • Zinc: 13% of the RDI.
  • Thiamin: 13% of the RDI.
  • Riboflavin: 12% of the RDI.
  • Vitamin B6: 11% of the RDI.

The same cup provides only 220 calories, in addition to 8 grams of protein, 4 grams of fat and at least 5 grams of fiber.

Adding quinoa to your diet is a great way to increase your daily intake of important vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Honey

Honey is rich in nutrients and antioxidants, has antibacterial properties, and can play a role in diabetes management as part of a balanced diet. But that’s not all.
One tablespoon, or 20 grams (g) of honey contains.

  • Calories: 61
  • Fat: 0 g
  • Protein: 0 g
  • Carbs: 17 g
  • Fiber: 0 g
  • Riboflavin: 1% of the Daily Value (DV)
  • Copper: 1% DV

Honey is essentially pure sugar, with no fat and only trace amounts of protein and fiber. It contains small amounts of some nutrients, but most people typically don’t consume enough honey for it to be a significant dietary source of vitamins and minerals.

Lemon preserves

What are the health benefits of preserved lemons?

For one, lemons are chock-full of healthful properties, like vitamin C, which is rich in antioxidants and has long been claimed to help boost immunity. Lemon preserves will last a long time. They also enhance flavors in food.

Sea Salt

Sea salt potentially derives 82 essential trace nutrients from the mineral treasure trove present in seawater. These natural minerals are valuable for the healthy functioning of the body. The nutritional wealth of sea salt may include vital minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, bromide, chloride, iron, copper, and zinc, among other beneficial elements.

Very smart way to go there Joseph488, you got that down. And the way things are goin I don’t think I’d want a place to close to a river for sure and possibly even a good size creek! Natural gas wells are in abundance round here too and a water well and gas well man that would be the berries! Like they used to say. And unlike a propane tank if someone “ had one for ya” it can’t explode with shrapnel and all .

Maybe you all motivated me, but got a better set of walkie talkies, GMRS type, one which is a mini mobile station for my car. And a car CB radio kit which includes a portable handheld, a first for me.

About a month ago, hunting, I got lost when my cel phone lost connection. I kept on driving and luckily my bars came back and was able to turn the GPS back on.

Sat phones were out of my price range, but got some peace of mind with my “radios”. Shopped around, think I got a good deal and they have weather stations on them.

Radios and and GPS are must haves when going off the road, or, even on roads far from civilization. In a different thread we talked about ocean boating. My boat, which I recently sold, had 3 independent GPS units, one with digital charts (chartplotter) and a full set of paper charts for any waters I might end up in. For example, if I was planning coastal boating in the Gulf, that meant I carried charts for the whole Eastern Gulf. What if I got caught in a big storm, I didnt want to get pushed into an area of the Gulf I didnt expect to go to, and had no charts. I also had two separate VHF radios, plus a handheld that was always clipped to my life vest. (plus, a personal locator beacon, but that’s a different discussion). Also, one of the GPS units had battery back up in case the boat electrical system got fried. I’d still be able to get my coordinates and correlate them to my charts.

The same mentality carries over to my truck. I drive long distances for work. I have a CB and a GMRS in the truck. The CB does well on the highway where the over the road drivers still use them, but off highway, GMRS seems to be the better option for a mayday call. I also have a Garmin GPS, plus an old one as a backup in the glove box. I never rely on my phone for GPS use, because unless you’re using a program with downloaded maps, it may know your coordinates, but that’s useless if it can’t download the map and you don’t have paper maps.

Glad you got out safe!

As a country boy I quickly learned water runs down hill, it then flows into another bigger that runs into another bigger until you find a town or a house. Relying on electronic gadgets are an aide.

Even then always tell someone where you are going with an expected return time. If you are absolutely lost sit down and wait to be found.

An old joke but still funny.

Two red necks were out in the woods hunting squirrels. After a while one had to take a dump. He found a downed log, dropped his drawers and eased his butt down. When he did a rattler bit him on the ass. He quickly yelled out to his friend that a rattler had bit him on the ass. Looking at his phone there were no bars. His friend said hold on, I’ll climb up until I get a signal. Once he got high enough, he called 911. The operator said he would have to suck some of the poison out. He said gotcha and ran back to his friend. Once back down to his friend that was bit by the snake his friend ask what do we do? His buddy that ran up the hill said; you gonna die!

I wish I would have bought one of those solar generators that some SEAL is selling on TV and they give a website to get it but I don’t like it when they have a big azz commercial on something but they can’t seem to tell you how much it costs. I don’t like that bull.
