Who KNOWS what the numbers stamped on the inside of the crane designate?
I thought it was configuration control? Maybe not?

I once had a Model 25-9 in .45 Colt - the “25” was the model # - the “9” indicated how many modifications had been made to the original design. FYI - “6” in the first digit of a model # denotes stainless - 642,686,629, etc.

Here is some great reading on the various numbers you will find on S&W revolvers, including Mod numbers, stars, assembly numbers, serial numbers and sometimes model numbers, and where they are found.
