A place that forces me to ponder
Honestly, thought of you when I was reading some of this stuff.
Agreed.
Ecclesiastes 7:2 It is better to go to the house of mourning (funeral/cemetery?) than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart.
Gettysburg is a sobering place to visit.
Of course, my snarky daughter was with us. It was a cold day. I remarked that there weren’t that many people there. She reminded us that yes, there were quite a few people there, they just weren’t above ground.
But the whole place has an aura of sobriety to me. For example, Gettysburg was a very small town. Soldiers killed in the battle were multiple times more numerous than the population of Gettysburg. Then the armies left and the people of Gettysburg had to deal with the dead bodies. Sobering to ponder indeed.
Battlefields will do that more times than not Brother…
Not just the DEAD bodies, but also all the dead horses and multiple thousands of the wounded of both sides that couldn’t be carried from the field, While the 3 days of the battle were a nightmare, the weeks and months after must have been hell, what with the odor of unfound bodies and parts of bodies, all of which had to be buried in holes and trenches dug by hand. Yes, if you visit, picture what the 4th of July, 1863 and beyond was like for the remaining residents.
Indulgence draws the weak to an early grave.
“Who’s that? Yeats?”
“It’s me mother.”
-In the Land of Saints and Sinners
It is always wrong to mortgage the present by the past, it is always wrong to allow the past to act as a brake upon the present. Let the dead past bury their dead. There is nothing that is more reprehensible, judged by common canons of thought, than to allow anything that belongs to the past to cause you to be a failure in the present.
Martin Lloyd-Jones
In simpler terms: let it go and get on with your life.
A Real Gambling Man!
My daughter: why is my fanny named after a real person?
‘You might need help right now, and yes, you should accept it. But there’s an old saying that goes like this: He who wishes to secure the good of others has already secured his own . Helping others does a few things, aside from just being the right thing to do’.
