Nestled between the dead batteries,
the dried, tangled rubber bands—
heavy, metallic, cold.
His weight, unnoticed—
unless hinges begin to sag,
when packaging refuses to yield.
When the world runs smoothly—
he is entirely
Invisible—
a fixture of the background,
the screw bearing the portrait’s burden,
deadbolt maintaining security.
Never called to ask
how the steel holds up
against the winter damp.
Should a pipe burst,
a bookshelf threaten to collapse—
desperate hands reach
into the dark—
groping,
for his familiar shape.
Discernible, just—
relief,
a sigh
Reliability, praised.
Thumb pressed,
routine
Mistaken loyalty.
Flip toss,
expected.
They use the blade,
the file,
the pliers,
wiping the grease on a rag,
job done.
They consider this love.
Returned to the drawer—
The latch’s click,
the voiceless thank you.
Forgotten—
in the quiet,
the edge dulling
just out of sight;
I listen for the drawer to open—
they must know
