Chicago is named after a wild and smelly onion. They all still grow in the region in prairie land or forested preserves.

According to Wikipedia, the word “Chicago” is a French translation of the Miami-Illinois word “shikaakwa” which means stinky onion.

You know the story behind this?

Meriweather Lewis of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition, it was said, had a notably poor command of English grammar. When they reached a ridge overlooking the yet to be named valley and he saw the water running at the bottom, he turned to his partner and asked, “Will, am it a river?”

And so the name and its associated pronunciation came to be.

Thanks! I did not know that! Scary part i hung out with some hard core Oregonians, in the 1990’s they were very proud of their state.
