I don’t travel much but I find myself having to drive around the Southwest shortly. Am unfamiliar with the area so sorry if this is a stupid question, but what about Indian reservations? I have looked and generally speaking you are not allowed yo carry. Will mostly be traveling on major roads do these enter into reservations and what do you do with your handgun. Is it appropriate to lock it in a safe unloaded? Of course I am not looking to be pulled over but you never know. Thanks.

Major roads are public land, not Indian reservations.

Almost a decade ago, I drove from Arches NP to Four Corners Monument, which I believe is under the Navajo. Before I left UT and crossed the border to CO, I put my unloaded pistol in a locked portable storage, and it stayed that way when I reached Four Corners.
Was it good enough? I didn’t get to find out since like you, I didn’t intend to get pulled over.
I was using the USCCA app the whole time which I found helpful.

Easy solution is don’t stop on reservation land, you need permission from the Tribe to carry on their land however the Highway is not their land so just keep on driving. Here in Oregon before I enter reservation land I put my unloaded firearm in a stopbox that is bolted into a semi-hidden compartment in the trunk and then lock my ammo in my pistol case. And this is only if I plan on stopping on the Rez which I only do in Warm Springs because I need to get my Navajo Taco fix.
Also tinted windows go a long way on rez land, you are way less likely to be pulled over for driving while white just don’t have a fancy vehicle. With tinted windows you can easily go 10 miles over the speed limit as long as you don’t drive looking like you are intoxicated.
