NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. dock workers and port operators have reached a tentative deal that will immediately end a crippling three-day strike that has shut down shipping on the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast, the two sides said in a statement on Thursday.

The tentative agreement is for a wage hike of around 62% over six years, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, including a worker on the picket line who heard the announcement. That would raise average wages to about $63 an hour from $39 an hour over the life of the contract.

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) workers union had been seeking a 77% raise while the employer group - United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) - had previously raised its offer to a nearly 50% hike.

The deal ends the biggest work stoppage of its kind in nearly half a century, which blocked unloading of container ships from Maine to Texas and threatened shortages of everything from bananas to auto parts, triggering a backlog of anchored ships outside major ports.

Both sides said in a statement that they would extend their master contract until January 15, 2025 to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all outstanding issues.

Tentative agreement reported in dockworkers strike

Both sides said in a statement that they would extend their master contract until January 15, 2025 to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all outstanding issues.

“Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume,” the statement said.

At least 45 container vessels that have been unable to unload were anchored outside the strike-hit East Coast and Gulf Coast ports by Wednesday, up from just three before the strike began on Sunday, according to Everstream Analytics.

The ILA launched the strike by 45,000 port workers, its first major work stoppage since 1977, on Tuesday after talks for a new six-year contract broke down.

U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration has sided with the union, putting pressure on the port employers to raise their offer to secure a deal and citing the shipping industry’s bumper profits since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tentative deal “represents critical progress towards a strong contract,” Biden said on Thursday.

His administration has repeatedly resisted calls from business trade groups and Republican lawmakers to use federal powers to halt the strike - a move that would undermine Democratic support among unions ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election.

The strike affected 36 ports - including New York, Baltimore and Houston - that handle a range of containerized goods.

Economists have said the port closures would not initially raise consumer prices because companies had accelerated shipments in recent months of key goods. However, a prolonged stoppage would have eventually filtered through, with food prices likely to react first, according to Morgan Stanley economists.

“After the first week, we can expect some impact on perishable products like bananas, other fruits, seafood, and coffee, meaning fewer goods are reaching consumers, potentially driving up prices,” said Tony Pelli, global practice director for security & resilience at BSI Americas.

Well, 62% is not too bad if they can agree to meet half ways between 50% and 77%. Hope the Union and the Company come to terms and seal the deal, and everyone will be happy. These employees surely deserve a wage increase for the hard work they put in, no doubt.

I hate to say it, but all they’ve done is managed to fast track their jobs to automation. Like so many other industries, it’s criminal to see. When SHTF we’ll be desperate for Humans that can keep our way of life going, and they will be no where to be found. This push for AI and the way the new generation is embracing it will be our downfall.

Let’s spell it out in English we can all understand.

The Union was told by the Democrats that this strike is BAD for Kamala so they accepted to push the “negotiating” to January because:

-If Kamala wins, they will get the weight of the government in their side in their negotiations
-If Kamala loses it become Tru is problem.

In either case the Union/Democrats wins. How is it difficult for people to get this?!?!?

And while we’re at it, EVERYONE in the world knows this union is under Organized Crime control. This dude lives in a huge mansion in NJ…

Reports say they have agreed on 66% over 6 years= 10.333% per year. Even after doing 21 years in the Teamsters, I never saw a wage increase like that.
Odd timing of this postponement/agreement 4 weeks before the Election?

China automated their ports years ago. I understand their desire to preserve their jobs, but once again China is way ahead of us, & eating our lunch.

Several thoughts. One, it’s not over. It’s on pause until January. Big difference.

Two, it’s on pause until right before the new president takes office. Let me spell it out for you. We KNOW our enemies have their hands and money in the unions. That’s a fact. If they (the people who want to wipe us off the face of the earth) don’t get the president they want, they will order the entire economy shut down. In a matter of weeks, the nation will be so weak that it won’t be hard for them to remove the government and reinstate one more to their liking.

Our strategic oil reserves have already been completely depleted thanks to Biden, who is certainly not going to rebuild them in his last few months in office. We can’t (won’t) produce enough oil domestically during that time. In other words, if the strike prevents oil from being delivered, the military will grind to a halt and we’ll be sitting ducks. Not that it will matter. China won’t have to invade us. They’ll just sit back and watch us destroy ourselves or starve, then come in with food and supplies to conquer us without firing a shot.

Yes, this is how serious this is. I’m not a doomsday prepper by any means but I know a threat when I see one. And this definitely qualifies.

If they can’t be happy with a 10%+ per year raise there’s something wrong with them. Not many jobs gets those kinds of raises. The only time I’ve seen such increases for myself is when I’ve been promoted or changed jobs.

My years in the tech industry, 10% is for people outpacing the others, driving increases in productivity and saving the company money. If someone is trying to preserve the status quo (e.g. fight against automation) they’re lucky to get 3% to keep pace with inflation. Most people who just want to turn the crank and do the same thing year after year are more likely to be replaced by someone else.

People claiming this proposed raise is well deserved need to educate themselves. The ILA is closely associated with the AFL-CIO. It doesn’t get any more gangster. If you want the truth about their prevailing business ethics, ask a mariner.

NO WORRIES FOLK’S!
It will ALL be over in (30) day’s
What I mean by that is if the LEFT get’s/stay’s in power the destruction of America will be complete. The Supreme court will be Neutered/Dissolved, as will the Constitution and the Second Amendment (which is of course not written in stone just like the First Amendment). We will become a Socialist Society of Sheep and Worker Bee’s and the MAGA’S will be dispatched.
IF Trump get’s in Anarchy will prevail. The LEFT once again will NEVER accept his tutelage and
his goals to make America Great Again. They want America in pieces so the Elite’s can carve us up and dole out the pieces to the Big Spenders (a little to China, Soros, Gates, Obama etc etc).
Either way we are prolly going to be in the SH!T until we finally grow a pair and actually become a force to be reckoned with and JUST SAY NO!.
Judging by the Rhino’s, and the turncoats in the Repub party it just seems to this observer that they are all in cahoots with each other. There is no two party system, reaching across the aisle, America First here. It is all for ME and NONE for the Citizens. Helena PROVED we mean nothing to them. And every supporter of KH/TW/BO/MO/Killery DESERVE what they get!!!

This whole thing has gone on too long, too many Innocents have died and No one seems to care but the ever dwindling numbers of Warriors and Maga’s who are now getting too old to fight or give a sh!t.

The Destruction of the United States of America is in ful view and 1/2 the population support it----'Let them eat cake (and fxxking choke on it hopefully)
