I have an Sig P238 as my concealed carry. I practice regularly, and occasionally shoot my self-defense ammo, which is Sierra 90 grain JHP. This ammo works great, but it’s hard to find and I’m almost out. Does anyone have experience with other self-defense ammo that works very reliably in the P238?? I don’t want to buy a bunch of expensive boxes that don’t work in this specific gun. I live in Commie California where ammo is expensive and background checks are $5. Thanks.

Get Hornady Critical Defense or Critical Duty. I use that in all my carry weapons. Including my Sig

My wife uses Sig Sauer Elite Defense, Hornaday Critical Defense, or Fiocchi .380 JHP in all of her 380s, although she does not own a Sig Sauer 380 (yet anyway).

Another vote for critical defense, I ran it through my 938 with absolutely no issues.

238/938 are basically the same gun, the 938 is the 9mm version.
My ex girlfriend had the 238 because she didn’t like the recoil of the 9mm. Pretty sure she was running critical defense as well.

Has she used Fiocchi JHP for sure in P238? I run Fiocchi FMJ target ammo regularly in my 238 with no problem, but never tried their hollow points. I just don’t want to order 10 boxes of expensive JHP and have issues with reliability.

The Hornady Critical Defense at 90 grains, 1,000 ft/sec, equals 200 ft-lbs of energy.
Underwood Xtreme Defender 68 grain is 255 ft-lbs in standard load or 296 ft-lbs in +P. They also offer it in 90 grain at 242 and 248 ft-lbs respectively.
I don’t own a 380, but I have shot the 90 grain 9mm in a Springfield EMP, FN Reflex, and Sig P938 - never a hiccup with any of them. The 9mm +P load is what I carry in the P938 100% of the time. I have loaded and unloaded the same cartridges over and over and have yet to be able to measure any set-back.
So, here’s another hat in the ring to think about 
I will also say I don’t subjectively notice any recoil increase - maybe it is because of the lighter projectile?

I don’t know if you do online procurement, but ammoseek.com is a pretty good search engine for finding what’s in stock. The biggest problem from my perspective is figuring out which distibutors are dependable. You should click on distributors rating to read reviews. Also pay attention to shipping charges … good luck whichever you choose.

Yes, I asked her. She does use Fiocchi JHP in her Sig Sauer 238 without any issues.
I do know what you mean about being fussy about your ammo. I used to own a Kimber Micro-9 that refused to function reliably with any brand of JHP. I struggled to find a brand that it liked, then just ended up selling the pistol. Thankfully I have a CZ P-07 9mm that doesn’t care at all what I feed it.
