I always thought Texas was open carry state but it looks to me you need a permit can someone clarify
Welcome to the family @Mary13 https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/resources/ccw_reciprocity_map/tx-gun-laws/#:~:text=Open%20carry%20is%20only%20legal,old%20for%20active-duty%20military.
Your neighbor from Louisiana says hello!
That is correct and if not mistaken it can’t be on the belt (e.g. shoulder holster with the Texas Permit). I could be wrong on that. Let’s clarify with @TexasEskimo
I have always had great experiences with law-enforcement even after state police finding magazines in a rental car that was not ours when I was 17. Not that it was a crime but the trooper wanted me to have peace because was in Texas.
He said, “Son your in Texas! You can have a gun!”
@Mary13. Welcome to the community, train hard and stay safe. From Michigan
Welcome to the team @Mary13!
Open carry and concealed carry of a handgun are both legal in Texas provided you have a Texas License To Carry (LTC) or a permit from another state that is accepted by the State of Texas .
Welcome to the family and god bless you.
I’d recommend you google the information yourself and decide what it says. No one here is able to provide accurate legal info. Even if someone was from your state and a lawyer…it doesn’t always equate to accurate info in your specific area.
My advice is to google it and call a couple lawyers locally to see what the answers are.
Welcome @Mary13
Welcome @Mary13, watch out for @Cobra 's they tend to bite, and don’t worry about the crazy minions ( @Jerzees ) running about.
For the record, I thought Texas was a “shoot them if you got them” state. Haha!!
Don’t worry about Justin is a guy with big heart for others
And what do I suppose to say? Nothing…I say nothing… I do just this:
Mary: bullfrog is correct, Texas is open carry provided you have a licence to carry permit. Concealed carry as well.
You may possibly be confusing the term with constitutional carry where it is permitted to open carry without a permit. Texas is currently not a constitutional carry state…at least not at this time. Who knows what the future holds.
I know I’m not texaseskimo, but I live in Texas, so hopefully I should be good enough for the moment.
Randall you are half correct, yes you can utilize a shoulder holster but the law (having read the relevant penal code very carefully myself since I have a LTC) says the shoulder holster and belt holster are permitted, iwb holsters and appendix carry would not be permitted in this instance. The law does not expand on that so any belt or shoulder holster is good, that said, it is best to get quality stuff for this kind of thing, but you do what you think is best for your setup.
(Personally, I prefer to conceal carry, but I do use a belt holster with cover garment, that way I’m covered both ways in case of…whatever happens.)
For all the claims of Texas being so free, they do not exactly follow the Constitution… not on this.
You can open carry, IF … you have a concealed carry permit.
Virginia and other states are open carry without a permit. You must have a permit for concealed carry.
Constitutional carry is usually stated for those states that allow carry without a permit, both open and concealed… I think Vermont, West Virginia, and a few others are Constitutional carry.
Technically, Texas changed from concealed carry permit to licence to carry (LTC) I’m just quibbling about the terminology of the permit naming at this point, but you are correct.
I stand corrected, I did forget about that particular point (viginia) but was aware of constitutional carry already.
